View Full Version : The Apolyton Convention is on...

...and frankly, I find myself more interested in the behind-the-scenes soap opera (http://www.apolyton.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=154630) than in the con itself...

Not much of soap opera, IMHO. The guy who was organising got fed up with everything and decided he couldn't be bothered with it anymore. Who can blame him?

i'm too tired to make any sense of that

Interesting doesn't exactly seem an apt description of it.

It was a pretty good time actually, a bit busy (which was good considering I had to leave earlier, but I would have liked to have hung out more with some of the people), and too expensive (meals and stuff were payed for though)

I hadn't actually followed that. But KH wasn't there either, I had been looking forward to seeing him again.

I've seen that type of stuff happen at another forum multiple times. After that, usually the meets will fall apart before they even happen.

JM^3

There are three possible types of meets

apolyoners meets: these have been all but one so far, they are just different members who want to meet eachother, I don't think that there ever will not be interest in that (we have lots of success at that)

apolyton meet: this is one about apolyton, I can't imagine anyone but Markos and Dan interested in this (there seemed to be quite a bit of it planned for in the con, but they decreased the ammount done)

civ meet: this is about civilization and computer games, this is what this con was about, it was all about civilization and other games.. less about the members and hanging out with eachother and getting to know eachother in RL (although during the three meals, and the gaming sessions some mixing occured)

btw, adding together the cost of the provided food, it was only ~75$, so really all it was was the food budget they said, we really did pay 100$ a person for the conference room and other such things...

I laughed when I saw the price they wanted to charge. Why would anyone pay to go to a meet?

JM^3
10-07-2006, 14:17:49
Well, for a civ or apolyton meet some cost is reasonable. I mean, we did have a convention room and other such things... as well as paying for the Firaxis and BHG staff for some stuff also (don't know..)

But yeah, the price was much too high, probably for the Markos flight...

To an apolytoners meet any price would be too much. (as the meeting could just be done in a restaurant/bar like all the others)

I never understood why the attendees had to pay for Dan's and Markos' air fare.

JM^3
10-07-2006, 14:34:30
Because someone wanted to make it an Apolyton meet (otherwise why care if Markos was there..?).

I think we just payed for Markos', but maybe we payed for Dan's gas?

They got presentations from the two main companies who make the games that the site is interested in, including Sid Meier and Brian Reynolds. If you are interested in that kind of thing, the price was fair.

JM^3
10-07-2006, 15:36:03
Oh, it was definitely good. I just think that 40-60$ would have been better than the 100$ (75$ was for food).

Firaxis was not at all good about keeping stuff silent, and told us quite a lot about Warlords and basically told us about other stuff (unnannounced).

I got really good vibes from Soren (he really loves Civ) and the BHG crew (they really love games).

(Sid was also cool, but he mostly talked abou t what he did for Civ)

Important bits

Friday night I won two out of 4 games (games played: Settlers of Catan, 2 games of Franks Zoo, 1 MP team game of Rise of Legends). Saturday I won the only game I played (Civ 4 MP) and won 3-4 prizes on getting Trivia questions right.

I found the whole "Chieftess" stuff hilarious. She's 29 and her parents wouldn't let her go to a bar with Poly people and she had to get permission for everything. SOOOOOO funny...

Why didn't JohnT go anyway?

Asher
11-07-2006, 01:16:49
And I get the impression that like 10 people went?

And why didn't KH go?

all in all, spectacular.

Yeah, I wondered about that a little also. I think she does have some social hangups.. might relate.

She is freinds with Trip and Nolan (condor###, older lady there) from my observation (perhaps only in game).

15 or so, maybe 20 when you include the people who were only their for the 2nd half of the day. KH probably didn't go because it was looking like a disaster, I was pleasently surprised that it wasn't (it was just expensive).

What is wasn't, though, was a time to really meet other apolytoners... (like all other meets) It was mostly about Firaxis and BHG. I only did more then shake hands with the few people who I ate with or played games with.

And you can see the linked thread for everything I know about the JohnT situation. I agree that there was a fuckup at some point (maybe not with JohnT, I don't know).

You definitely made an impression with Markos and DanQ. I keep thinking about saying snide things about people, but that wouldn't be very nice. (I think about doing it because it would be funny)

1. Is Trip still cute?
2. Are you saying Markos and Dan were saying snide things about me?

Asher

Asher you are such a dumbass. This was the perfect opportunity to show up and really have a good time. And by "perfect" I don't really mean perfect because that would mean a lot more people, but hey, you gotta go with the cards you're dealt.

DanQ has lost a lot of weight from what he has said. Yeah, Markos apparently didn't want to be instantly recognizeable.

I don't know about snide, but they did talk about you a bit.

You got it. That and the fact that I was in the middle of moving and planning a wedding. Oh yeah, and the fact that suddenly the cost was 60$ higher than previously quoted, and aforementioned wedding has made me poor.

Basically, JohnT disappeared and the first I heard about anything since February was like a month before the convention. I was in Montreal from the 23rd of June to the 27th, then I lost the ability to access the internet from home from the 27th to currently (fuck Comcast)

If it had been 60$ cheaper (and included th efood) it would have been fine financially.

I intend on organizing CounterCon '06, a convention on the alternate views and debates on the things that really matter in life. Only 150 euro's per person, including meals. It should blast ApolyCon out of the water.

Mr. Bas

Alas, that can only be done for the people who devote so much of their time to realize such an event, the organizing committee. Too bad, but I can assure you it is worth the money. Don't forget: the 150 euro's entrance fee includes 5 free Dutch-size beers!

mr_G
11-07-2006, 15:32:11
kewl 5 beers man o man i will be totally drunk for laaik 5 days

JM^3
11-07-2006, 15:34:34
Yeah, I will probably not visit a Civ related meeting again where airfare is paid for (except possibly for the current designer).

BTW, a low for drinks consumed at a meet (per Capita). ~10 beers and 2 whiskeys (I was good) consumed over the 1.5 days.

Jon Miller
(I, DanS, and Snotty consumed most of the alcohol)

JM^3
11-07-2006, 15:35:34
Actually, Metaturtle consumed 2 beers (which is as much as I had), so I should just say that Metaturtle, I, DanS, and Snotty consumed all but one drink (or something like that).

Ha ha, jon.

I had much more booze than you that weekend.

On friday I went duckpin bowling and drank a sixer of beer and a bottle of wine.

On Saturday I had a bunch of vodka and beer. I played flip-cup and did a keg stand.

I try not to drink much anymore.. not having much booze was fine by me.
