If you hadn't noticed, spammers are starting to create users for the specific purpose of advertising here.

Do you have some sort of email verification on? It should, as far as I know.

How do you know mortgage_loan_s123q1 isn't just another Keith DL?

If it isn't and its a spammer, that would be an improvement.

Damn it, I was going to register that. Now I'll have to use mortgage_loan_s123q2, and it just isn't the same... :sigh:

You're asking seriously? Because the previous registered user was russianLolita or something like that, also with a link (probably to a porn site) in it's profile. It's one of the ways how spammers operate nowadays, had the same happen to my forum.

It's funny that people think we're actually going to look at user profiles with bizzare names like that and click on the links. I don't even look at my own profile.

That's not the primary goal of generating spoofed users.

One word: pagerank.

The post above is stupid.

Chris

Yes...yes it is.

Don't think its too much of an issue. Email verification is still on, though I guess if you try hard enough it is possible to get round. I think the recent 'spam' posts have been done manually. However, I will add a CAPTCHA thingy soon.

OK. I've had around 200 such users at much forum. Didn't use e-mail verification at the time 'though.

Ok, I have made a subtle but hopefully very effective change.

Only logged in users will see the newest member text and link. So even if spammers keep registering it will not help their pagerank.

I've also removed 'vbulletin' from the title to stop google indexing that.

Excellent work! Now you can concentrate on those big big big avatars :D

Geek.

Well that didnt work in the end.

I have added an extra registration field (on the default template). It's dead easy for a human to enter, and should totally flummox the bots.

If the bots somehow get it, I will change it.

We should forbid new registrations.

It's the old ones which cause the most trouble.

Colon

Forbid them too.

Tizzy
18-09-2006, 10:19:14
Ok. You're banned.

Colon

I'm not old!

Tizzy
18-09-2006, 11:22:02
Sure you are

Colon
18-09-2006, 12:01:15
Ok, I'm old but you're older. You go first.

Tizzy
18-09-2006, 12:05:29
Go where?

Colon
18-09-2006, 12:19:03
There.

Tizzy
18-09-2006, 12:19:28
That doesn't sound like much fun, I think I'll stay here.

Colon
18-09-2006, 12:21:02
How do you know if you haven't been there yet?

Tizzy
18-09-2006, 12:26:24
Do you need to open the Word Ass thread to know what it's like?
Same thing.

Colon
18-09-2006, 12:28:46
What's it like then?

Tizzy
18-09-2006, 12:29:37
Boring.

Colon
18-09-2006, 12:32:27
Sometimes, that's a good thing.

Tizzy
18-09-2006, 12:36:36
Not if you're already bored.

Colon
18-09-2006, 12:39:32
If you get bored twice, they cancel each other out.

Tizzy
18-09-2006, 12:48:05
It doesn't. What really happens is my brain starts to melt.

Colon
18-09-2006, 13:03:15
No way. That's impossible.

Tizzy
18-09-2006, 13:40:09
It's definitely possible, and it aint pretty.

Colon
18-09-2006, 13:44:33
It would be spectacular though.

Tizzy
18-09-2006, 13:45:19
Only if spectacular = bad.

Colon
18-09-2006, 13:56:55
A spectacle that's bad is still a spectacle.

Tizzy
18-09-2006, 14:02:59
Spectacularly bad.
