I'm doing a small commission in rotterdam.
A couple bought an appartmen and it needed some small changes.
Just the bathroom and the hall.
very small commission for me and normally these things are great because they are quick.

The couple are two nitwits who have no expierence with redecorating and contractors so that means they have to trust me. From the beginning they give me no credit at all, never mind the weather, small commission it will be over soon.

So my work is:
1. a design
2. some drawings.
3. find a contractor who can do the work real quick.
4. negotiate about the bill, get some discount etc.
5. hold an eye at the thingy when the contractor begins.

total amount of hours I thought i would spend at it. 16 that means a 1500 euro fee.

those guys are really suspicious and the nag a lot, things are never great always some things to complain about.
The only compliment they gave me was ewhen i did my negotiation and get them a 2500 euro discount.

Another annoying thing is that they never contact me at working hours, they expect me to answer my phone and some stjoepit questions at sunday or late at night. For me that means they have no respect for me.

I did 52 commission so far and there is only one (no 17) where i had the same expierence.
Normally i trust my gutt feeling when i enter a job and rethink if the job would be fun and i can do my thing.
The reason i started my own bizz is that i enjoy my work and be free to do my own stuff as an artist/architect.

At this moment the contractor is busy doing his thing and the customers are still complaining about nothing.

They payed 50% of my fee allready and my work is actually done there.
This morning i got an email full of disappoining thingys and now i am at the point to say....... fok off, if you are so disappointed in me, don't pay the other 50% and try to dooooo di doooooo it yourself.

gimme some advice.......

ow and venom, kill them pleezzzz

"Dear Mr (insert name here).

I refer to your e-mail of the 10th June 2006.

While I fully appreciate the concerns you expressed in it, I must remind you that it is far easier for me to walk away from the situation than it is for you.

Ha ha. Ha ha ha ha ha. If you want me to sort this out, it'll cost you another 5000. In the meantime, you can kiss my arse.

Love.

G."

I like Laz's approach. It puts them in their place and gets you more money. Win win. :)

If it was bugging you that much, the loss of half a fee was worth it. In any case it's money you never got your hands on in the first place so what you never had you ought not miss too much.

Send them a list of terms and conditions that states;-

"Any communications out of businss hours may result in the termination of the contract if they are not deemed emergency or strongly relevant to the project".

Then just get a new phone number and ignore them.
