England is the largest and most populous constituent country of the United Kingdom. It accounts for more than 83% of the total UK population, occupies most of the southern two-thirds of the island of Great Britain and shares land borders with Scotland to the north and Wales to the west. Elsewhere, it is bordered by the North Sea, Irish Sea, Atlantic Ocean, and English Channel.

England is named after the Angles (Old English genitive case, "Engla" - hence, Old English "Engla Land"), one of a number of Germanic tribes believed to have originated in Angeln in northern Germany, who settled in England in the 5th and 6th centuries. This is also the origin of its Latin name, Anglia. It has not had a distinct political identity since 1707, when the Kingdom of Great Britain was established as a unified political entity; however, it has a legal identity separate from those of Scotland and Northern Ireland, as part of the entity England and Wales. England's largest city, London, is also the capital of the United Kingdom.

"England" is sometimes used incorrectly as a synonym for Great Britain or the United Kingdom, usually arising from innocent confusion over local geopolitical terminology.

1
God save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen:
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us:
God save the Queen.

2
O Lord, our God, arise,
Scatter her enemies,
And make them fall.
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix,
God save the Queen.

3
Thy choicest gifts in store,
On her be pleased to pour;
Long may she reign:
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice
God save the Queen 1.

Although in the original lyrics, verses 4–6 are now omitted entirely—partly to reduce the length of the anthem and partly due to the "rebellious Scots to crush" line in verse six:

4
Not in this land alone,
But be God's mercies known,
From shore to shore!
Lord make the nations see,
That men should brothers be,
And form one family,
The wide world o'er.

5
From every latent foe,
From the assassins blow,
God save the Queen!
O'er her thine arm extend,
For Britain's sake defend,
Our mother, prince, and friend,
God save the Queen!

6
Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush,
And like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush.
God save the Queen!

That's the National Anthem of Great Britain, not England

what's the proper one then?

I particularly like the one which sings about "the new Jerusalem", can't ever remember the title....

they use 'god save the queen' for the footy team, but i think i've heard 'land of hope and glory' before. i don't think there's an official one, it's a bit of a topic of debate.

MoSe
30-05-2006, 14:49:48
and you implicitly answered that the title I was looking for is "Land of hope and glory", did you?

"Rebellious Scots to crush"

man, they bugged you so much they made it in the lyrics! that's a great compliment to the Scots....

Assuming it's not a 100-0 attempt MoSe, I think this may be what you were thinking of ? (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/alan.stuart/music/lyrics/jerusale.html)

Crushing rebellious Scots was a national pastime. One can now see the folly of dropping it. :(

Yeah funny how verse 4 starts with the olive branch of
Lord make the nations see,
That men should brothers be,
And form one family,
The wide world o'er.

and then says fuck it and goes back to scot crushing in verse 6

paiktis22
30-05-2006, 15:11:23
it was a moment of weakness

but maybe it means all of england should be brothers and doesn't include scotts. (who take it very seriously if they are confused with english as i've mentioned before)

paiktis22
30-05-2006, 15:13:26
oops. nope. it says all nations should be brothers. :o
it's very hot in here

That's actually called Jerusalem, words from a William Blake poem

thanks Gary, NAHN, honest.

I think it might be indeed, I'm almost positive it's the one sung by the choir at the opening of Chariots of Fire (?).
Otoh I might check the Brain Salad Surgery track at home tonite, which frankly puzzles me a bit :)

Funko
30-05-2006, 15:28:36
It definitely is that. Along with Land of Hope and Glory it's one of the main "English" patriotic songs. Also, Chariots of Fire took its title from the song so I imagine it'd be in there somewhere. I'll google.

Gary

All nations should be brothers, but little brothers are annoying and need to be crushed regularly.

Well Jerusalem is on the soundtrack:

MoSe

did it have anything to do with the fact that Palestine was a british land/protectorate/whatever prior you gifted it to build Israel after WWII? ;)

Gary
30-05-2006, 15:38:02
Don't think so. Wiki has a decent discussion about it. (Inc. the 'discussion' tab.) It's around the idea that Jesus went globe trotting during the times not recorded in the bible.

The lyrics are interesting, debatable, and puzzling. The tune is very stirring. Parry did a great job.

Over all I like it a lot, even if I don't totally understand it's references :)

yep, I dared to switch my speakers on at work to listen the amazon sample, it's definitely that, thanks :)
I never understood a word of it except Jerusalem, I'm glad I lived on till this age, to finally find out :D
