Maybe I'll have a bit of a practice. ;)

That sounds reasonable. But since the stuff has stayed around, it does imply no one in the house likes to drink it.

Back to the topic.

We finally got this working last night after about an hour. We both had to do some kind of IP forwarding shit on our routers. Judging by the quantity and quality of data on http://www.portforward.com this is totally normal but I've never had to do it before. Bah. :bash:

Nills Lagerbaak

I think it's something to do with hosting it on your computer... Can't understand why I never had to do that for Halo??

Funko
06-06-2006, 08:33:48
Nills, did you save the replay of that second game? I did but I haven't had a chance to look at it yet. So I can send it to you if you want.

It should be noted that I'm no expert on this, but I reckon you were doing mostly ok.

In all the battles you were a pain in the arse, using your hero's actions and harrassing my wizard so at one point in the first game he was nearly dead and had to run all the way back to my own base chased by a couple of ghouls. The only problem was I outnumbered you, and had leveled up my heroes. I'll be in trouble when you get a bit faster at the economy stuff!

I think when we play again I'll try not being humans (I'm really shit with all the other races) and that should even things up a bit.

Couple of tips... I think you had too many peons in the second game. Much better to build a second town hall by the second gold mine. I think at that point I had 5 in my gold mine and about 3 people collecting wood and one building things. I did build the lumber mill and do the improvements that allow increased lumber collection though.

At the start I quickly build a barracks and a hero building so that I can get a few units together to go scouting and kill some monsters to level up my hero, which gives him much better abilities. It's worth thinking of a quick way to accomplish that. In the second game I thought I'd risk attacking you instead of going for the monsters, but you killed my wizard and chased me off...

Oh yeah, and when you are orks, you can click on your houses (ork burrows) and there is a thing to call your goblins inside so they shoot out at the attackers.

Nills Lagerbaak
06-06-2006, 08:39:42
Yeah, I saved the replay but also haven't had a chance to watch it yet.

Yeah, I'm happy that when I optimise the economy bit I'll be a lot more effective. I never know how many peons to start off with.

I also built hero factory and barracks first off, but never seemed able to amase a big enough army to defend myself by the time you arrived. This was normally down to lack of gold.

In the first gamer you didn't use the second mine till the very end, was this because of the map shape?

Nills Lagerbaak
06-06-2006, 08:45:59
Oh yeah, and I was looking for that Orc inside house thing!

Funko
06-06-2006, 08:53:05
I just didn't really need it until my first mine was about to run out.

If you build a town hall as close to the mine as it'll go (ie. where your first town hall starts off) it takes 5 workers to mine it, if you add any more they'll just get in each others way. With the Undead I think you can only put 5 acolytes round the mine anyway? I reckon that at the start having one mine is about all you need, you get money in about as fast as you can spend it what with needing to build houses etc for units and improving stuff. Plus you don't have enough population space to have the peons to man it, you need the units!

At the start I normally do pretty much the same thing every time. I send 3 peasants to the gold mine, one builds a house, and then I hold down shift and click build and tell him to build the hero workship second (that queues up his actions) the last remaining peasant goes to build a barracks. Then I queue up three peasants in the town hall, and use the flag on the town hall to send the first to the gold mine, second to the wood, third to the town hall.

When the guy finishes the barracks I get him to build another house, then send him to get wood too. And sometime around then I'll probably build a third wood peasant...

Then I'll start building footmen and hopefully get about 5 footmen ready to go scouting when my hero arrives.

The flags on the buildings that tell units where they should go once they are built are really useful. You can put them on your heros, which is what I normally do, so that when I'm building units replacement during a battle they automatically go to the hero and join in.

Nills Lagerbaak
06-06-2006, 09:34:07
Ah, good advice!

I didn't know about the shift click to queue up jobs. I'm constatntly having to click on the unemployed worker icon, which distracts my attention from elsewhere. I guess if you are playing for speed this is very important.

Setting the rally point on a hero is a very good idea too, then you can just watch the screen he's in, and make him use his spells.

Right, bring on the next game!

Funko
06-06-2006, 09:36:34
The other useful things are grouping units.... (which you might or might not know).

Double clicking a unit of any type selects all units of that type on a screen. Ctrl+number ties all selected units to that number so just pressing the number selects the whole group etc.

F1, F2 and F3 are the keys to automatically select your heroes (in order that you build them)

There are short cut keys for your buildings too, but I haven't used them yet.

Funko
06-06-2006, 09:41:56
Also, I'd rather leave a worker inactive for a bit and run the battle if I have to.

Nills Lagerbaak
06-06-2006, 10:02:46
YEah, of course. The world doesn't stop if a worker is inactive.

I was aware of the grouping thing. It works well for double clicking and slecting all of the same type on the screen, but I don't like assigning them to groups cos the groups change so often that sometimes you think you have a mega army at the touch of a number, but there's only one peon left or somthing...!

I have favourite units (like the pit fiends) but they're only any good when they've learned the web skill. So you have to do a bit of research before you can create certain units.

Funko
06-06-2006, 10:26:09
Yep... Although sometimes I create them and do the research whilst they are on their way to do battle, just in case. But it's a bit more risky.

Got any time tonight? I still have to build this futon but should be able to fit in a quick game I think.

Nills Lagerbaak
06-06-2006, 15:17:45
They mine gold in the same way as the undead, i.e. the whisps inhabit the gold mine.

The moving base thing can be fiddly, but the base is actually damn strong so if it comes under attack it can kick ass quite well.

Watched a couple of replays last night.. sadly I didn't save the one where we both thought you nearly won.

Watched the second game from Monday and the second game from last night. Both were you as orks.

The start's the problem. Just needs to be a bit quicker really. First thing I'd change would be to not send all my starting workers into the mine. Send in 3 and use 2 to build a house/burrow and a barracks. Then queue up three workers and when they arrive send them to something like Gold Wood Gold or Wood Gold Gold.

That way you finish your barracks much faster and can start building units whilst your workers are building your hero temple thing. That way you should have a good few units to go scouting with once your hero arrives. For the orks I'd normally try and get about 3 grunts ready by the time my hero comes arrives

For the Orks I might be tempted to get the Farseer (the guy on the big dog) first because you can get the ability to create the hellhounds straight off that are good for scouting, and then you can get chain lightning which I love. Either him or the blademaster because his mirror image is really confusing. I'd leave the Tauren Chieftan until last. He's a good fighter but he doesn't have many skills that can help in an early battle.

With upgrading, whilst upgrading units is a very good idea, I think you need to focus a little bit more on building them. If you build a few units, then research the upgrade you have a few tough troops. If I attack before you do the upgrade, at least you have a few troops to fight with. A few slightly weaker troops is better than an upgrade sitting in the blacksmiths. :D

Despite all that...

If you'd actually spent all the money you had in the bank on units in that second game last night I think it would have been as close as the first one. You're definitely improving already. My feeling was that you were better with the Undead, but stupidly I didn't save those replays.

Nills Lagerbaak
07-06-2006, 08:14:56
ah, that all sounds very reasonable. I keep forgetting that you actually start off with money, so there's no need to whack all your orcs into the mine straight away.

Defintely agree about the heroes, I'm begining to remember the relative skills now. I remember the tauren chieftan to be incredibly hard but his spells can't really sort out many foes. I love chain lightning too! When theat's cranked up to top level it's awesome!

Well, onwards and upwards I say!

Funko
07-06-2006, 08:21:23
I was exactly the same when I started, couldn't believe how fast everyone was at the start. Doesn't take much practice to get loads better. It's definitely worth having a few goes against the computer and just trying to get that start right. (although give yourself a bit of a handicap, the computer seems to be nails...)

I did read a few starting strategies on the web that I half remember now which helped a lot.

Nills Lagerbaak
07-06-2006, 08:41:24
Yeah, traditionally I'm for sitting back, amassing a massive army then kicking butt, but ultimately there's no skill in that as all teams just end up at the same level.

Maybe that strategy works better on the bigger maps where the're more room for expansion?

Funko
07-06-2006, 08:51:21
I always was too. I think the problem is the game doesn't really favour that kind of approach. It's designed for fighting from the start, even if it's just the monsters around the map.

And I think you summed it up perfectly, a small edge of one or two in the early game is better than having two equal armies clashing later on.

In 2v2 games it seemed a bit more common to get massive armies fighting, and they were bigger maps.

Funko
07-06-2006, 08:53:07
I've also got Dawn of War which is a Warhammer 40,000 game, built on the same game engine as Warcraft III. It's slightly different because instead of having to mine gold and stuff you get money by controling areas of the map. The more map you control the richer you are. Could always move onto that in a few months when bored with Warcraft.

Nills Lagerbaak
07-06-2006, 09:03:01

That is not entirely true. His Shockwave spell is one of the most damaging spells in the game, as it gives full damage to everything it hits. It is pretty difficult to use properly, though, like most other advanced Orc abilities - Kodo beasts' Devour and the wolfriders' net being two other examples.

I would agree that in most cases it is best to go with the Farseer first, because of the Spirit Wolves. The main Orc problem is that you have no healing until Master Witch Doctors, so it is really important to keep your Grunts from getting hurt - by getting the creeps to attack the wolves instead. The blademaster's mirror images can also be used, but have the disadvantage that they themselves do no damage.

There is one small, snowy map where all the creeps are simply so tough that they will knock out spirit wolves in less than a second. On that one, you really need the Tauren Chieftain first. I have also generally found him to be a more powerful/effective fighter than the Blademaster, but opinions may differ. I think the Blademaster is much more of an assassin type, which requires extensive micromanagement to get him into the right position. I also think the Orcs in general are the most micromanagement heavy race.

The Undead have Gargoyles, the best air-to air fighters in the game, and Frost Drakes, arguably the most dragon-like units and probably the most powerful all-round. They take ages to train and eat 7 food each, though, so you can hardly afford more than two of them at a time.

The elves have Hippogriffs (air-to-air only) that can be trained to take riders (+ archer, now also air-to-ground); Druids of the Talon that can go into bird form (very effective air-to-air) and Chimeras, large two-headed dragon-like beasts that have ground attack only but do siege damage to buildings and are simply evil when combined with Trueshot Aura.

Orcs are pretty helpless against air units while the Undead are almost immune.

When I used to play competitively mass wywern rush (no grunts, creeping/harassing with FS only) was a viable strategy, even against undead.

Then again many things changed. I heard the nerfed Coil and Nova :(

So I guess I should modify my statement and instead say that wyverns suck in the traditional heavy fire support role of big flyers.

Tonight is the 3rd day in a row I've been supposed to put this damn Futon together...

So I have to do that today, once I've done that then yes probably.

Nills Lagerbaak
07-06-2006, 14:32:59
Fook the futon. Anyway, I thought you'd done that the first day, then we played once you'd put it together :)

That futon is making a fool of you.

LOL, I'm no expert, I said 'competitively' as an euphemism to say I played a lot, I reached level 25 or so, not more :p

Despite common think though massed Wyvern beat fiends (and almost everything if bloodlusted) and the surprise effect counts a lot. As an undead player I learned to switch to gargs as soon as I saw a bestiary :p

I agree though they are not 'support role' flyers, either they are the backbone of your army or you don't use them

Funko the expansion is good. Damn you guys, make me want to install the game again.

Tau Ceti
07-06-2006, 22:49:26

Nills got his first victory last night (and Tau Ceti found us online when we were chatting about it).

I had a quick look at the replay... and now I'm very disappointed. I had it in the bag!

You caught me napping/healing after I'd taken out that big dragon, but I still won that battle.

Then, I rearmed a bit, bumped into you on the way back to your base, won that battle too, and took out your town hall with those two catapults. I think if I'd taken out any unit producing building at that stage, especially your hero shop, I'd have won. When we played the other day I think I suggested to you concentrating on unit producing buildings? I am an idiot.

After that I was way too slow building my replacement army, and crap at upgrading them. And I built too many witch doctors for healing and your grunt only force minced them because I didn't have enough fighty units. And you were lightning quick rebuilding your force.

The most inexcuseable of all these lapses was that I got my Farseer up to level 6 so could have scouted your base but didn't.

Right at the end, when your last mine ran out, and I still had a working one, I was nearly at the stage of having a bit of a force together to take out your remaining units.

Fantastic game.

Fist, maybe you should reinstall and join us? 2v2 is much better than 1v1v1

Nills Lagerbaak
08-06-2006, 08:22:12
Great game - really enjoyed it!

You definitely almost wiped out my entire force at one point. When my town hall went I thought that was it. Luckily I had built my second gold mine to the right of the map, in the opposite direction to how you attacked. My forces repelled you attack long enough for me to rebuid my forces (by which time my grunts were mega hard).

Can't belive you took out that dragon. I am grudgingly impressed :)

Funko
08-06-2006, 08:30:42
In the previous game when we played on that map where I was humans, I took out both dragons. There was no way you'd have taken it out, you need people that can shoot aerial units to kill it and you only built grunts all game.

Nills Lagerbaak
08-06-2006, 08:34:12
I did build a couple of headhunters.... but yeah I took on the dragon with about 10 orcs and two heroes and the only damage I could inflict was the farseer's standard lightning attack :)

Funko
08-06-2006, 08:38:25
I know, I watched that on the replay. If only I'd known! :D Makes it even worse that I didn't win.

I really fucked up the start as well. I built two burrows before I built my hero hut and used up all my starting wood.

I know what the problem was, I wasn't drinking last night.

Funko
08-06-2006, 08:42:31
If I hadn't just lost, I'd have been laughing about that dragon attack.

Nills Lagerbaak
08-06-2006, 08:44:11
Yeah, it was pretty retarded, you lost to a retard.

Still, to be fair, my grunt army was terrifying and unstoppable so don't feel too bad.

Yep...but then, I had your strategy down too :p

Hiondsight is always a marvellous thing.

Funko
08-06-2006, 09:16:57
My strategy was make loads of witch doctors partly for healing but mainly because they say "I'm dee docah!" when they emerge from the shaman hut.

Nills Lagerbaak
08-06-2006, 09:27:48
Humans should have really strong westcountry accents. That would be ace!

Nills Lagerbaak
08-06-2006, 09:34:51

They should have weekends where they refuse to work and drink scrumpy all day and start singing. That would be fooking wicked, I might suggest it.

Is it Vanilla Warcraft, on Northrend server? Ill hop onto MSN when I get home and badger you for your ingame name there Funko.

Funko
08-06-2006, 09:51:09
Yes.

Funkodrom and Goatlord666

We're normally found chatting in the goatlord channel.

You'll undoubtably be miles better than either of us. We're both very much beginner standard. Luckily I don't understand the ranking system. Never played anyone I didn't know.

Nills Lagerbaak
08-06-2006, 09:51:59
Umm, his name is still Funkodrom. Imaginative as ever :p

Vanilla warcraft it is, although I might download the expansion at some point. Also I seem to have more maps than Funko.

Kitsuki

The neutral heroes, particularly the goblin ones, are wicked too. I'm sure you can pick the expansion up really cheaply.

if it's 1v1v1 we can gang up on him... although that'll be more embarassing when he still wins.

I worked my way up to at least rank 9/10, simply by mastering the orc tower rush with a Farseer. :)

Four/five minutes into the game and you can easily have 6 towers built right outside their base.... ;)

Funko
08-06-2006, 09:56:02
Nills, just so you know, anyone who was actually playing Warcraft relatively seriously could easily mince me in about 10 minutes. So it'll be a bit of a step up in standards again.

Nills Lagerbaak
08-06-2006, 10:04:34

Kitsuki - do you have a head set/ microphone?

Nills Lagerbaak
08-06-2006, 10:26:19

Funko - we'll still gang up on him, right?

Funko

You'll need a seperate new CD key for the expansion pack still. No use having it before I get it. :p

Nills Lagerbaak
08-06-2006, 10:28:15
Yeah, we'd look pretty stupid. Again - can I stop my troops killing your lot?

Funko
08-06-2006, 10:30:14
I don't think so, just have to target his.

Or you keep him occupied and I'll trash his base or vice versa.

In reality he'll probably rush one of us before the other has a chance to do anything so it'll be up to the other to get in quick before he can regroup.

We could actually make it so that we are both on the same team, in which case our units wouldn't attack each other, but that'd be a bit harsh.

Kitsuki
08-06-2006, 10:34:29

I played a skirmish game last night. Oh, the suckitude.

Crypt, Altar, Ziggurat, check.

Ghouls, check. Lots of ghouls, actually. Hmm, I need another ziggurat. Hey, why can I build this many troops so quickly? I never used to be able to do that. And why can't I upgrade to spirit towers or build crypt fiends? Ah, no graveyard. *smacks head*

Build graveyard. Run off to nearest creep camp. Discover they are far too tough for a level 1 hero and a few ghouls. Set ghouls to chop down trees in order to reach another creep camp (trees far away from any dropoff point). Meanwhile, use some of the now vast amounts of resources to finally upgrade the Necropolis.

When the ghouls are halfway through the trees, it finally dawns on me what the creep camp colour coding means, and I realize that I should instead have chopped through the trees right next to my base to reach a green camp. Switch to that. Fight the creeps at last.

Find out that even though my Necropolis upgraded a while ago, I still have not built any advanced buildings. Smack head. Build buildings. Go back to hacking through the other trees. Finally, after knocking out all "my" creeps, I have a level 3 and a level 1 hero.

I still actually won, but only because the computer players made no active effort to get through their trees, allowing me to get more creeps and also destroy some of their buildings via bombardment from the outside. Plus I had handicapped them to 70% hit points.

I'm going to get slaughtered. :(

Tau Ceti
08-06-2006, 12:56:17
FFA would be chaotic, but I think more fun.

Funko
08-06-2006, 12:56:50
Yeah, that'd be a laugh. And great stuff on the replays too.

Kitsuki
08-06-2006, 12:58:54
I think FFA. I think it would keep me in check too, because you can't really go demolishing people when there are three other people who could come hurt your base.

Only downside is that sometimes the game can really stagnate if everybody starts turtling too much, but lets hope that doesnt happen.

The beast master summons teleporting bears. The brewmaster has all kinds of drunken boxing powers, and can breath fire. :D

YEs, that was noted. He is possibly the coolest character from any game, film or play.

And he's an adorably cute panda bear (something for the ladies too)

Btw, its widely thought the new Alliance race for WoW was going to be Pandaren, but they changed it so that the Chinese market wouldnt get all funny about people killing Pandas in game... :(

I thought that was just an April Fool's joke.

It was originally a joke - before WC3 was released they announced the 4th race were the Pandaren before the Night Elfs were announced for real - on April Fools Day.

It was such a popular joke, they just made a neutral hero in the expansion!

Good, games! Even better comments from thos knocked out!
When I got knocked out I kept shouting at Funko to do things. After a while I asked Kitsuki why he wasn't doing any of the things I said and he said people who got jknocked out couldn't talk to playedrs. I asked why and he said "so they don't give them hints":o

Match Reports: Funko's perspective (having not watched the replays).

Game 1. Five For All.

Drunkness Level: 3

I only had one 5 player map, so that's the one we used.

I'd had a few beers in the pub and then some wine whilst Nills sorted his technical difficulties so I was nicely warmed up.

Started with humans, and my initial build up went relatively ok. Got my economy nicely started... built a handful of units and went exploring. Found Tau. with a lot of units. Bravely ran away with a TP scroll. Except a few units didn't teleport. So I had a couple of horsies and footmen by his expansion mine. And started hacking away at his peons. Got a few before his main force came and killed my 4 men.

Then Tau advanced on my base with his big army... and I was going to be crushed, but for some reason he had to leave, I guess someone attacked him. So I built up another small force and went exploring the other way, found Fist's empty base and started destroying buildings, until he came home (apparently he'd been rampaging in Kitsuki's base) and I bravely TPed away again.

Then Tau came and crushed what was left of my base and I was an observer for the rest of the game. Tau followed up his victory against me by taking out Fist, who had been hampered by my rampaging in his base (sorry!). Meanwhile Kitsuki and Nills were having a cat and mouse game where Kitsuki sat outside Nills base for ages whilst Nills, with very few units and gold, sat behind his towers and occasionally ventured out to be slaughtered.

Then Kitsuki went home and sat in his base. So, all three players were sat in their bases doing nothing.

and Fist and I watched frustrated as no-one attacked....

until, Nills (our hero) with a rag tag band of units, charged out of his base to go attacking. GO NILLS! His rousing suicidal charge to his own death was most inspiring. He stumbled upon a Kodo beast rider that Tau had left in the open and killed it. "Smells like victory!!!" but was then sadly crushed as he invaded Tau's base.

Then there was more sitting doing nothing. After a while Tau attacked Kitsuki. Kitsuki posessed some Tauren, destroyed Tau's force. At that point it was all over. No-one had any gold. Kitsuki had the only army.

Eventually I got bored and quit, which unfortunately killed the game as I was hosting, but it was only a mopping up job for Kitsuki anyway.

Yeh, it was funny, but you missed out the game changing bit which made Tau lose - the reason I won was because I was lucky enough to spot Taus army going for Nills base. Waited for him to attack Nill's towers etc, and then attacked him from the rear - so he was taking casualties both sides and I was possessing all of his choice units.

It was his second army that I mopped up on my defence (possessing more again.)

At the end I didnt realise Tau had so few units left, because from my perspective in that game, he was in a much stronger position for most of it.

The reason I didnt actually try and kill Nills was because I was just farming experience for my heroes from killing his heroes and units.... :)

Edit: Yes, you are right, I forgot that! :)

Game 2. Another Five For All

Drunkeness level: 5

We used a 6 player map this time. It had 6 starting location gold mines, and only 3 expansions! Expanding quickly was going to be vital.

I was humans again. Initial build was ok... got my archmage out and some footmen. Scouted a bit, cleared the closest expansion and built a town hall. Collected a few units and went exploring. Luckily this time I bumped into Nills who I defeated, after a bit of a running battle, and much reinforcement and a bit of help from Tau who joined in at a critical moment. Luckily Tau was called home to defend because I had limited troops then.

I took out his army and his base. Built another expansion on his gold mine which was still lovely and full. Apparently at that point I was the first to get 3 mines...

At that point, Fist attacked my first expansion, and I was desperately defending when he left.

Somewhere around then Kitsuki was destroyed by someone.

I should have been building units like crazy... I thought I was but apparently according to the observers I wasn't. Anyway, shortly after that Fist attacked my first expansion again, and then Tau attacked my second expansion. I didn't have the units to stop one of them, let alone both, and I was out. I especially couldn't counter Fist's Frost Wyrms.

It was over soon after that. Fist had 3 mines to Tau's 1, and once again the Frost Wyrms were the key to his victory.

In game one, when I so famously sent my "army" out on a rampage, I thought it was an awesome army. But then it was there one second, gone the next! Did someone possess them all?

Wait until you see the replay and what Tau and Kitsuki had at that point. Unfortunately they were just killed really fast because Tau had many more, much better units. - to be fair, that is because he had gold to build them which you didn't have.

In the first 2 games both victors were using Undead, coincidence?

Game 3 - 1v1v1

Drunkeness level: 7 (previously full wine bottle now mysteriously empty)

Kitsuki's connection dropped him at the end of game 2, and Fist had to go, it was getting on for midnight UK time by this point. So it was just Tau, Nills and I for a 1v1v1.

I decided to go for a random race this time... and got humans again!

This game is a bit blurry to be honest... but we were all trapped in tree locked build areas. I built up a bit of a force, expanded into my second mine, then mortar teamed some trees down to see who I could find. It turned out to be Tau. We had a bit of a battle over his expansion. Apparently he was in some trouble at this point... and found a nice healing fountain in the center of the map which saved him. I didn't know that was there.

At around this point Tizzy arrived home and opened more wine and brought me some.

Once again, I didn't have enough units and couldn't seem to build them fast enough. Eventually I made one half hearted attack on Tau's expansion too many. he'd built loads of defensive towers there and wiped me out. Then he steamrollered Nills base too.
