View Full Version : Can Greeks be Trusted to do the Eurovision Properly if They Can't Even Fix a Forum?

VetLegion-

Well?

The single most important cultural event of Europe is tommorow. Thousands, nay, millions, nay again, tens of thousands are preparing to watch this peak of 3000 years of human creativity and cultural advancement in the west.

And at the same time Apolyton's database died. Greeks are clearly incompetent in the extreme. Is there enough time to move the EV into some competent former Turkish proctectorate? Israel?

Does anyone here know SQL? It seems MarkG could use a hand.

I don't know why they don't simply restore the last good backup, fixing some broken code by hand could take who knows how long.

Chris

Why would you need to restore to a back up? The threads were still there and doing fine before they took it offline. It's just that the function of replying and creating new threads seem to got screwed somehow.

What would be lost? You lose a couple of threads and you get the system into the last stable state. Probably more posts have not been made because of the problems than would have been lost with resorting to backup.

I get the same error message (though I haven't verifed each word, but it appears the same)

There seems to have been a slight problem with the database. Please try again by pressing the refresh button in your browser.

What would be fixed? I'll freely admit I'm utterly oblivious to matters of code, but I'd suspect the codes of the function of posting replies and the like are separate to the database. I'd seem to me that using the backup would just replace the latest database with an older one, not fix the functions in question.

But I'll quit blathering before I raise the ire of Asher.

VetLegion-
19-05-2006, 22:23:03
I was thinking of not restoring just the database, but the whole site. The code for forums + the forum database. Usually it's all backed up together. That would bring us to the pre-problem state.

If the mess is the result of some vulnerability in forum code, the forum would be exposed again but at least we could post until (and if) another attack comes.

Btw., now I get a blank screen :)

Colon
19-05-2006, 22:30:18

I've seen something similar. In that case, MySQL created temp index files in the data directory, and the MYI files got all futzed up (they couldn't be read or something). I deleted the temp files and ran myisamchk, and it was all good. Took about 10 minutes to fix.
