One of my colleagues has just sent me some promotional material to proof (the office concensus being that I have the best grasp of spelling and grammar.)

Helpfully he has written:

"I have already closely proof red the below but can you double check?"

Oh dear! Send it back and tell him you didn't get passed the intro sentence!

I was trying to work out if he was trying to mock me or not...

In between laughing at the article I told you about Funko!

Oh my God. I actually did write past and then changed it to passed.

Actually I think it is passed in this case....

Funko
08-05-2006, 16:26:17
It isn't.

Past

prep.
1. Beyond in time; later than or after: past midnight; a quarter past two.
2. Beyond in position; farther than: The house is a mile past the first stoplight. They walked past the memorial in silence.
3.
a. Beyond the power, scope, extent, or influence of: The problem is past the point of resolution.
b. Beyond in development or appropriateness: The child is past drinking from a bottle. You're past sucking your thumb, so don't do it.
4. Beyond the number or amount of: The child couldn't count past 20. See Usage Note at pass.

Own goal?

Funko
08-05-2006, 16:28:42
What?!

It should be "past" in the sentence you wrote, and I was lazy so I just copied and pasted the dictionary entry for that useage. No 100-0 attempted.

Nills Lagerbaak
08-05-2006, 16:29:51
No, I mean I knew it was past, but lured you into finding some elaborate definition. Definite own goal!

MattHiggs
08-05-2006, 16:35:33
That's 100-0, not own goal.

Sean Connery: I've got to ask you about the Penis Mightier.
Alex Trebek: What? No. No, no, that is The Pen is Mightier.
Sean Connery: Gussy it up however you want, Trebek. What matters is does it work? Will it really mighty my penis, man?
Alex Trebek: It's not a product, Mr. Connery.
Sean Connery: Because I've ordered devices like that before - wasted a pretty penny, I don't mind telling you. And if The Penis Mightier works, I'll order a dozen.
Alex Trebek: It's not a Penis Mightier, Mr. Connery. There's no such thing!
Nicholas Cage: Wait, wait, wait.. are you selling Penis Mightiers?
Alex Trebek: No! No, I'm not.
Sean Connery: Well, you're sitting on a gold mine, Trebek!
