How can you get the number 51 using mathematical operations and these numbers: 2,4,4,4,5? Note: Each number can only be used once and when squaring either use a four and two or two fours.
Anyone who can help me out here?

Japher

2,4,4,4,5

ok I have it I think

4*4 = 16
16 - 2 = 14
14*4 = 56
56-5 = 51

You're not right Japher.

The answer is 54-2-(4/4)

Japher

Gary

Japher

True, but I got it independently having not really trusted Mr_G to have put a sensible question :D

And it is on one line ;) :p

question #2:
Is there really any difference between "it's not" and "it isn't"? They both mean "it is not", right? Why would you use one or the other?

Gary
02-05-2006, 15:29:47
Why shouldn't I ?

4 to the power 4 (dunno how to type that properly) = 64
64-5 = 59
59-(4*2) = 51

Gary
02-05-2006, 15:58:48
to the power 3 ?

4*4*4 or 4^3

Tizzy
02-05-2006, 16:23:41

what's so special in 51?
what's so special in 2,4,4,4,5?????

for instance, 2*3=6 -4=2 *5=10 -6=4
using 2,3,4,5,6 and the same * - * - pattern, you get to 4 which is also the average of those 5 numbers

coincidence?
so what?
whatever?
moreso?

(2*3-4)*5-6=(2+3+5+6)/4=(2+6)/(3+5)*4=(2-3)*4*(5-6)

I'd never hoped to still be that schmartje at my age!!!11!!!!1!!!

4^4 = 256

256/5 = 51.2 , so as long as you are only working to 2 significant figures...

Gary

plus .24 ?
