What are they? I'm in the mood for depressing music. I need something to cheer me up.

take the whole cd Berlin by Lou Reed

Pretty much anything from Joy Division should fit the bill

Both good suggestions. Alternatively, try 'The Holy Bible' by the Manic street preachers or songs like 'How soon is now?' or 'That joke isn't funny anymore' by The Smiths.

In a more metal/grunge direction, Alice in Chains, Today is the day and Life of Agony should work. Also, Jane Doe by Converge is one of the most bitter and vicious records I've heard.

The live version of 'The End' by Nico and Brian Eno on 'June 1 1974' :

1. Driving Me Backwards
2. Baby's on Fire
3. Heartbreak Hotel
4. End
5. May I?
6. Shouting in a Bucket Blues
7. Stranger in Blue Suede Shoes
8. Everybody's Sometime And Some People's All The Time Blues
9. Two Goes into Four

1974 live release for one off supergroup featuring Kevin Ayers, John Cale, Brian Eno, Nico & guests Robert Wyatt & Mike Oldfield.

Cale's 'Heartbreak Hotel' is fittingly gloomy too.

Towering Inferno's 'Kaddish' is a bunch a' yocks too.

I also heartily recommend:

Suicide: Frankie Teardrop

David Bowie: Warszawa live on the 'Stage' albyum with Simon House on electric violin

Brian Eno: Ambient 4: On Land

The Associates: Gloomy Sunday

Nina Simone: My Man's Gone Now

Marta Sebestyen: Istenem, Istenem

Well I've just listened to "The Drift" by Scott Walker and that's made me depressed...borders on unlistenable.
