Sir Penguin (after talking to two Futureshop guys, who bounced me from the audio section, to the music section (where the Xbox 360s are  ), to the TV section): Hi, I'm looking for an adapter to convert RCA audio output into 5.1 computer speaker input.
Futureshop Guy: RCA... 5.1... uh... that's not how it works. What you need is a receiver, blah, blah, blah...
SP: Uh-huh.
FG: blah, blah, blah, optical audio cable, blah, blah, blah (takes SP to staff room, shows SP Toslink port on the staff's Xbox 360, takes SP back to receiver section, shows SP Toslink port on $200 receiver)...
SP: Uh-huh.
FG: So you can do this with the RCA, and this with the optical cable, blah, blah, blah, and you plug your 5.1 speaker wires into these ports here.
SP: Yeah, I have computer speakers with 1/8" jacks.
FG: Oh, those won't do at all! You don't have a media centre PC? No? Here, we have this great deal on right now, let me show you this Sony sound system. It's got 200W 5.1 sound, and a receiver.
SP: I can't afford that.
FG: How old are you?
SP: 23
FG: Do you have photo ID on you?
SP: Yes?
FG: I'm 23 too (bullshit), I know what you mean about financing this sort of thing. What I can do is get you a Futureshop Card, blah, blah, blah, it'll take just a couple minutes if you have photo ID, blah, blah, blah, you know how with a credit card you have 1 month to pay it off before you get hit with ridiculous interest, with the Futureshop card you'll have 3 months to pay, interest free! (WOW!!!) And if you give us $59.95, we'll finance the $59.95 AND the sound system for a whole year! (DOUBLE WOW!!!)
SP: Yeah, I'm not willing to go into debt for this.
FG: Oh, it's not debt, you just don't have to pay for a year.
SP: Uh... that's debt...
FG: Well, sure, if you want to define debt that way. (at this point, he knows he's not going to sell me a $500 sound system, so he's stopped caring) Anything else I can help you with?
SP: No, no thanks. (gets the hell out of the store)

Anyway, this is what I was looking for:

I love how the extended warranty for 1 year is more expensive than the adapter itself. Brilliant.

yeah, I haven't ever really frequented FutureShop (mabe I have)

but I remember going in on occasion, and I don't remember them being this dumb...

but then, I guess I normally buy parts online (I mostly buy games at stores)

FutureShop is owned by Best Buy.

Only difference is Future Shop has commissioned salespeople.

was it always owned?

I seem to remember seeing both of them together, and than futureshop closed it store

Normally when I go into Futureshop they leave me alone, because I look like I know what I'm doing. I end up having to ask for help, because the place is huge, and not really well laid out.

Yeah. And NCIX has the same adapter for less than $4.

No, bought out like 4 years ago.

Mind you, they are intentionally building big Best Buys literally right next to big new Future Shops in Calgary now. I've also seen them in Winnipeg like that. It's mind-boggling, really.

They never know what they're getting into with me. I'm always looking at the computer and home theatre stuff and they just assume I'm a dopey kid spending daddy's money so they feed me the same standard schtick.

The best part was when they had some deal with AOL and tried to get me to sign up for AOL for six months with "absolutely no obligation". Or the time I was told the integrated graphics on the HP computer I was looking at (yeah, I fuck with the salesmen) would run the game I had in my hand (which was Half-Life 2 at the time).

I asked him how he thought a graphics chip with 2 TMUs and a shared 64-bit memory bus could run such a game and he literally just smiled and moved on.

Reminds me of the "Geek Squad" counter where no one knew what Rambus/RD-RAM was. Give a kid a T-shirt and call him an expert. :)

Futureshop sounds so much more interesting then a pc shop.

You know what would be a better thread than this?

SP's Photoshop Adventures

That would be a solid gold thread.

The neighborhood I live in is well-to-do, kids driving daddy's beamers and buying $5000 computers at Future Shop.

Unfortunately, my expected life span is less than 60 years.

Venom

And you're already 68, so you're living on borrowed time.
