View Full Version : Recommend good songs over 10 minutes long

Who doesn't like a song over 10 minutes long? :D. Maybe that's just me. I'm mainly into metal, so I'll list some good 10 + minute metal songs. The list isn't long, and some are better than others. Rime of the Ancient Mariner- Iron Maiden. The granddaddy of them all. Easily my favourite. Halloween- by Helloween. Good german power metal. Deliverance- by Opeth. Has it's slow moments, but finishes strong.

And who can forget the classics. Inna Gadda Da Vida- by Iron Butterfly. Sure they were a one hit wonder. But it was a good hit.

Other than things like Pelican and Explosions in the Sky, where practically half the songs are ten minutes long, my favourites are:

Ghost Love Score, by Nightwish, in a rare moment where music triumphed over operatic shouting.
Luca Turilli - Kings of the Nordic Twilight - Bad Italian power metal.
NOFX - The Decline, in which the band construct a carefully considered critique of modern american society in an eighteen minute punk opus.

And of course, Deep Purple's Child In Time.

Some versons of My Father My King by Mogwai run to an epic 17 minutes, and lots of their other tunes get on for the ten minute mark.

Slint's Spiderland album has lots of pretty good long songs too, though I'm not sure any of them atually run to 10 minutes.

They don't. The longest "Good morning, Captain" is about 8 minutes long.

"Yoo doo right" by Can is great. 20 minutes of an awesome building mantra, containing some of the most insanely violent drumming Jaki Liebezeit ever hammered out.

Tool have some good, long songs; Third Eye and Reflection are the only ones I can think of that make it past the 10 minute mark, though.

Sonic Youth's Trilogy is well over ten minutes, but whether you should count it as one song is debatable. It is brilliant, though.

Converge - Jane Doe. Great ending as well.

I really like Isis and Neurosis, and their tunes are typically quite long. I can't think of any particular titles right now, but they both have several songs of over 10 minutes.

"Autobahn" by Kraftwerk is 28 minutes long in the album version, though the 9-minute single version is a fair bit funkier.

The 13-minute album version of "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" by The Temptations with its infamous 5-minute intro kicks the single version's ass.

Isaac Hayes's album "Hot Buttered Soul" has some great symphonic soulful epics, I personally prefer the 12-minute "Walk on By" but if you're into mood-setting spoken word the 18-minute "By the Time I Get To Phoenix" is pretty good too.

If you're into extended, psychedelic guitar solos, "Maggot Brain" by The Funkadelic clocks in at just above ten minutes and is totally whacked out.

Purple Rain - Prince

End of.

That's only about five and a half minutes long...

Maybe you played it twice?

If you want something you haven't heard of, "Cool Pon Your Corner" by Barry Brown is probably my favourite jamaican 12-inch (because of the crazy scientist-enhanced echoes in the dubby bit) and clocks in at 10:19.

Marquee Moon - Television

definitely just over ten minutes

He Who Accepts All That Is Offered (Feel Bad Hit Of The Winter) by Teeth Of Lions Rule The Divine almost hits the 30 minute mark and is great if you think that a combination of SunnO))), Lee Dorrian, and a 9 minute melvins-style drum intro could ever, possibly, be worthwhile.

Jimmy Eat World - Sky Harbor

*End Is Forever*

It's Goodbye Sky Harbor.

Curtain Call - Black Album from The Damned iirc. One whole side of the double album. Brilliant

King Crimson - Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Part 1

I like Part 4, too, but there's a lot of space with just bells and stuff.

Of course, there's also Zeppelin's "Achilles Last Stand".

Time to Melt - Lard - 31 Minutes ... not metal though
I am your clock - Lard - 15 odd minutes ... not metal though
Full Metal Jackoff (not sure how long) - Jello Biafra and DOA - not metal, but an utterly superb track.

14-04-2006, 06:05:46
They are slightly metal (especially Full Metal Jackoff - which is rather splendid)

15-04-2006, 16:58:14
Certainly not Kettle though, which is what the first post alluded to.

My first thought was Opeth, but you already mentioned them. I presume you have listened to their other songs too then?

19-04-2006, 15:38:33
Doh...how could I forget Suite Sister Mary by Queensryche?

19-04-2006, 16:06:23
temporary sanity?

Possibly...more like old age and red wine though.
