In a fortnight, I'll be off for three weeks to Mexico and NY. Two weeks will be spent in Mexico, where the very broad plan is to start out in Mexico city and surroundings, stay there for a few days, down to Oaxaca province, then to Chiapas/Palenque, and then further on towards Yucatan, with possible a brief excursion into Belize or Guatemala. Have any of you guys been in one of those areas, and if so, any recommendations or advice on where to go and what to do?

Oaxaca is suppose to have the best food

I've been to the Yucatan, very nice:b: Didn't do Cancun, but went to Akumal. The Cenote swimming around there is awesome. Can't remember the name of the place. Check out Locogringo.com, they have good reviews and good things to do in the Mayan Riviera/Belize area. I always have wanted to go to Belize and wrestle Jaguars. Plus, the Mayan people intrigue me, and they are very nice... short, but nice

I've been in Cancun, party town.
Only been to Chichen Itza, but it's very impressive. And diving in Cozumel is absolutely fantastic!!

Yeah, I went out Cozumel. The shopping out there is good too.

Playa Del Carmen is a fun little town as well.

We went to Xel'ha because wifey wanted to swim with the dolphins. It was expensive, but nice. I wouldn't go back.

It was Yal-ku Lagoon that was good snorkling out of Akumal

I don't really have the intention of going to places like Cancun or Acapulco, they sound to me like the mexican equivalents of Salou or Torremolinos. I'd rather be at some less touristic place, although a good nightlife is definitely a plus.

Our best lunch was in Tulum... definitly see Tulum, in the morning, and then fish tacos at Zamas

I dragged them to Chichen Itza, and they weren't very impressed by a "bunch of old stones"

Good plan, Oaxaca (Puerto Angel for a few days at the beach), Chipas and Palenque are all excellent choices

some other major sites are worth your time, even if very touristy (chichen itza and teotihuacan)

Mr. Bas

Yeah, Teotihuacan and Chichen Itza are also both on the list, I think they'll just be day trips... Also, any suggestions on the places with great nightlife that are not too overtly touristy (like Cancun or Veracruz)?

can't say I had a particularly remarkable night life type of time in my 4 months of Mexico (but I was coming from Eastern Europe and had drastic standards)

I'm afraid the only worthy debauchery will take place in spots you want to avoid (DF and Cancun)

isn't that an oxymoron?

not that I know anything about Mexico, but that's a myth here in Italy

Basically he's looking for an honest to god, native Mexican whore house. Those places are vile. I love them.

A great surfer's spot apparently. A mate of mine has been there, I'll ask him.

University towns tend to have good nightlife without masses of tourists, but I don't know of any examples in Mexico really. Plus, touristy places are more expensive usually, which makes it even less attractive.

Yeah, Cancun is basically a place were 18-25 year old North Americans go to get dunk out of their minds and fuck each other. If you're over 25 then you'll feel like an old man in a kid's store.

Also all the good surfing spots are on the Pacific coast.

Put the drugs in balloons and swallow them before you go through customs.
