It just arrived today from America.

I was looking for some books about NY with my upcoming visit and this was recommended:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0451168275/qid=1143028384/sr=1-10/ref=sr_1_2_10/026-2904126-7061238

Still it appears to be out of print in the UK so the only ones i could get were used ones from US sellers. I was fairly astonished to see a copy for sale at 1p, and pretty much bought it for the fuck of it at that point.

Of course P&P was about 2.75 but it still works out to be rather cheap.

The bit i don't get is the sellers, who are an organisation called betterworldbooks.com who fund literacy schemes. How the fuck do they make any money on a 1p book?

Many of their books appear to be used. My guess: they're donations, so the entire price is pure profit (1p, woot!) They may have a deal with a shipping company for cut-rate shipping.

At a guess, I figure your book was marked down to get it moving, if it's unpolular and been in their inventory for a while. Good deal though!

I believe that company passes on the books of tragic ebola victims to others in order to fund their StopEbolaWithBooks! campaign.
