To paraphrase:

Well, its finally done. It's been the most horrible thing we've ever worked on. We had wanted to make it a purely online game, but seeing how bad FF11 is doing as an online property, and how costly that was, we were told to make it a purely offline experience so we had to start all over again.

If this game doesn't sell out by the end of our fiscal quarter, we will have to go out of business.

Presuming we are still in business at the beginning of our next quarter, we are going to just ship the game straight to Korea. Fuck them, they can deal with the game being in Japanese! Ha!

Eventually, we'll hire a few freaks to translate it to English, so somewhere around Christmas selling season is when the rest of the world can expect to see this. That's what you get for being a lesser race and not understanding the most advanced language of the descandants of the gods.

Wow, good thing you don't work in the marketing or promotions department.....lol. Maybe your next project will be a little more enjoyable.....:D

darkstar stop making a show of your retardedness

ffxi has been a huge success for square, and there is very clearly no danger of them going out of business

last quarter financials for square enix were $36.58 million profit on $588.18 million sales, and this was actually rather poor by their recent standards, apparently something to do with dragon quest VIII coming out. The online divison is stone cold profitable and growing.

But thanks for reminding me why i put you on ignore in the first place.

KG, it's a joke. Get over it.

Matt, wow. Being on KG's ignore list. However will I live? Is there a KG-Ignored support group in the secret forum? Should I ask Mr.G, Venom, and Funko how they deal with half their AEs being on that list?

King_Ghidra

I'm not on anyone's ignore list! I'm cool and popular for the first time in my life. Although it's cool and popular amongst a bunch of tools, retards, and dorks so that's probabyl not too good a thing. I'll take it though.

SP, you can always make a Coooooooool it AE. And or teach it to Mr. G. Of course, Mr. G will probably change it to something like:
coooooooooooooooooooo -di -cooooooooooooooooool.

Mr. G is now my Sponsor over in the super secret forum. So I'm getting help dealing with being on KG's ignore list. Mr. G, he's my hero!

Not specifically K_G but I do find a lot of people are very quick to put all sorts of people on their ignore list for virtually no reason. Often it boils down to something along the lines of "ZOMG! YOU DISAGREED WITH MY POLITICS?! ROT ON IGNORE. ASS FACE!"

Moreoften then not it is the ignorer rather then the ignoree who has behaived childishly.

If it makes CG better for him, more power to him. This place is meant for fun, not getting too wound up over stupid things people do or say.

What I find funny is how some people are just bound and determined to announce "YOU ARE NOW ON MY IGNORE LIST!". Being the self-indugelent childish bastard that I am, I drop people on my ignore list quite often. But I don't bother announcing it. When they stop getting under my skin because my latest wave of stupidity has passed, I take them off it. Again, I don't go and announce "You are now deemed worthy of being read by me."

That's what is childish. Announcing it is a desperate bid for some internet love and attention.

I generally put on ignore people who do massive pointless spamming that the forum becomes difficult to read, like James. Or I ignore people who regularly post things that I may find offensive or just don't want to see, like James. Most of my ignore list seems to be of posters or AEs who no longer post, like James.

This may be another Darkstar translation special. Just like his Final Fantasy XII thread.

Ok, Venom, if you want this translated from dark corportate mushroom to normal board talk, I'll do it. But just for you...

Well, its finally done. It's been the most horrible thing we've ever worked on. We had wanted to make it a purely online game, but seeing how bad FF11 is doing as an online property, and how costly that was, we were told to make it a purely offline experience so we had to start all over again.

"This was a long hard slog. The hardest we've ever done. This is due to a few reasons. Such as changing directions for this whole project, and practically having to redo the whole thing."

"We first started doing this online. But that was changed for a few reasons. Namely:

A) We got creamed in the internet buzz for making FF11 Online. This caused us some considerable embarassment initially.

B) There is a worry that if we don't produce a 'classic' SP game, we will lose the majority of our fan-base

C) FF11 isn't the pure money press that was initially promised. There are issues of on-going maintenence that wasn't initially expected or properly figured in, and this causes some embarassment. While we have a better idea of these things now, at the time it was decided to make FF12 purely an offline experience, these costs were not known, and there was a worry that they would continue to spiral out.

D) We figured that most of the people that would subscribe to a new Online FF would come from our existing FF11. A off-line game, however, would make us money from our dedicated fan base that isn't already on FF11, as well as those that are on FF11. So, this is a win-win for all... us and all of our extraordinarily wonderful fans"

Note: This incorporates a lot of the stuff said by various members of FF12 development team stated throughout the developer communities as well as some odd management that were occasionally carried in various places.

If this game doesn't sell out by the end of our fiscal quarter, we will have to go out of business.

We had wanted more money to hire more teams members to pack in the goodies and really knock the socks off our fans and loyal customers. But we kept getting refused on adding more artists, animators, designers, and all those wonderful people that let us create a good modest product for people to try. Indeed, I was turned down with such force and so often on this in the latter parts of the development, that I came to feel like we must be tottering on the edge of bankruptcy if we couldn't afford to add another artist.

Presuming we are still in business at the beginning of our next quarter, we are going to just ship the game straight to Korea. Fuck them, they can deal with the game being in Japanese! Ha!

I heard a rumor on the way over here of a buyout. If that doesn't happen, and corporate life goes mostly as we expect, then we will be shipping this game in its original Japanese version straight to Korea. We know that there are certain things that could be localized to better suit the majority of our fans and loyal customers in Korea, however this will allow them to enjoy another small slice of FF immediately.

Eventually, we'll hire a few freaks to translate it to English, so somewhere around Christmas selling season is when the rest of the world can expect to see this. That's what you get for being a lesser race and not understanding the most advanced language of the descandants of the gods.

We hope to have FF12 translated for the English speaking market by the Christmas buying season.

The note about freaks is mine. Most people that I know that speak English and Japanese that aren't born into a bi-lingual family generally consider themselves "freaks". It's one of their own terms to seperate themselves from the general "geek" community. They also embrace a few other terms that are too polite to be posted in a non-dark mode. As several of these freaks actually do work game translations of Japanese to English, I think it's fair to use their own terms, even though I'm not one of them. The other note about lesser races and descandants of the gods also comes from them, as the non-Japanese JtE translators tend to be treated as inferior beings by their Japanese co-workers and mangement. You want the full scoop, go hang out on their community boards IRC channels and chat with them yourself. The desciptions they give is that its not truly bad, but it is still often detectable. Maybe that's a cultural thing giving the JtE workers that view, maybe it's just the kind of thing they'd see due to some common mental failure they possess, maybe it really exists. I don't know, but whatever it really is, its common enough to hear it mentioned by a very large minority of the community.

Let me know if you need any other translations from the odd and crazy things I speak to something more understandable. It's not nearly as much fun posting it in straight talk though. And if you don't understand my straight talk, I doubt I could make it any more understandable. Sorry.

I didn't say I wanted anything. Especially if it results in a good old fashioned Dorkstar nuclear wordbomb post.

Darkstar

Well, that will teach you then! You were complaining about not having anything to do over in the main forum. You can now read the long version and see which you prefer... me trying to be funny and brief, or me going long post until it's quitting time.

I'd rather learn to read braille than read that.

Darkstar

Oh, come on. You probably think braille is some form of Brazillian porn.

Venom

Which, if true, makes it infinitely better than anything you've ever posted. Unless you once posted Brazillian porn.

Darkstar

Brazillian porn is bound to be better then anything I've ever posted. I've never posted pictures of pretty naked women.

I have linked to a few pictures of pretty, mostly naked women, but I doubt that makes up for my multitude of posting crimes.

I thought Advent Children was really good. It doesn't stand on its own as a good movie, but if you're a final fantasy fanboy then you'll love it imho.

There is an english-subtitled bitorrent version out there, by the way.

Isn't that who is going to be watching AC? FF Fans?

DaShi

It's just all over the top fight scenes between Cloud and gay badguys. The other characters are only there for a short time to support him.

King_Ghidra

I'm with dashi, i thought it was hollow crap. It 's just one hugely extended fight scene with zero story and paying lip service to the original ff7 game

Summary:
latest news from Square Enix is: "OUCH!"

All profits down by almost 50% from expected. The big blame is put on bad sales for FF12 and KH2 as they are horribly under-performing.

The good news for the Square: the movie FF7: AC which helped keep the company *profitable*.

Early lessons learned is that they should stop pissing away the money that FF11 brings in on poor choices/stupid things and stop expecting people to simply buy their games like they were the latest fashion accessory.

Full statements and managerial bellybutton pondering expected in the next few weeks.

contrary to that gamespot report and square's own apparent pessimism, they actually just posted a 17 billion yen net profit, which was exactly what they had originally predicted

maybe their accountant had a panic attack or something...

Darkstar
25-05-2006, 20:52:56
Yeah, I saw a news article on their final report, which has them in good shape. So its good news all-around.

Easy URL:

I wonder what the story is with their accounting though? Seems odd to be adjusting their final figures that much. Glad they are doing good (more games for us!), but I'd worry if I worked for a company that was doing that to often.
