Me and the wife go on sunday but we've no idea what shoes to pack. We know it's going to be cold and there might be snow on the ground so we thought about some walking boots.

But, if they keep the streets cleared then whats the point?

On the other hand if they dont, we might fall over and break our necks or end up with soaking wet feet :(

Help us!

If it's significantly snowy then it's unlikely they'll clear the streets. If they're busy and it's been a long time since it last snowed then the'll likely be so compacted and well sanded that you can walk around in any shoes, but if it's melty weather or it's snowing full blast you might want to go for something watertight.

I say a good pair of sneakers work pretty well in most circumstances, if it's icy (which, if it's cold enough, is rare) they might even provide better grip.

It'll probably be cold as hell, so warm shoes might be a good idea anyway.

Well, you should probably bring winter shoes then. Or wooly socks. And a warm coat, sweaters to have underneath, long underwear, scarves, hats and gloves or mittens.

fucking hell. You need snowboots, with or without snow.

-17 is not that bad. As long as you're well-dressed and it's not too windy it's not too bad at all since the air will probably be dry and there's very little heat transferrence. We had -20 last week and I was certianly much less cold than I am now (-3, high winds, snowing like hell).

Oh, and at -17 it won't be snowing, so you should be okay with slipping and stuff.

I'm in Latvia right now. The streets are quite clear and there isn't much snow on the roads so you don't need special footwear for the streets although In wouldn't wear any decent trousewrs as the crap from the streets will be get end up on them and anything decent will get ruined.

Scabby had it right but its important is that your outer layer is windproof.

Enjoy Riga. Don't lose your passport as I'm not going to bail you out with the authorities. ;) Anyway - I'm going to Finland next week.
