View Full Version : What do you think of The Arctic Monkeys?

I'm pretty non-plussed by them really. Their two songs I've heard I can take or leave, but I was wondering if they are now popular/selling well more as a result of the massive hype they are receiving than the fact that they have this "huge" internet fanbase.

What do you reckon?

Funko

From what I've read the press hype sprung from the internet fan base.

Was just reading this.

I don't really get it either though. I quite liked the dance floor single but it didn't blow me away.

Selling because of the hype definately, but their album's still really good. Their "huge" internet fanbase only got them far enough to get noticed, then NME (and every other magazine/newspaper in this country) took over.

Still, I'd much rather they sell loads because of hype and press attention than someone like that x-factor guy or whatever.

Rodgers

A spokesman for music retailer HMV said: "In terms of sheer impact... we haven't seen anything quite like this since The Beatles."

That seems typical of the press attention. Listening to Radio One yesterday every single DJ was just about coming in their pants over them.

Until one of those two idiots that does the charts said that he'd heard the album and thought it wasnt that good. Strangely, he didnt elaborate on his comments though and for the rest of the show they (the two DJs and various sound clips from others - Jo Whiley especially) just went on and on about how they were the greatest new band ever ever ever blah blah blah.

So much for unbiased BBC eh?

Yeah, I dont begrudge them success and I dont dislike the songs either. I just think they're "not bad". Just feels like a kind of "Emporer's new clothes" sort of thing.

It is amusing that they're being hyped into outer space, "because there wasn't any hype". Even the front page of the Times says "bigger than the Beatles"...

Debaser

In terms of how many records they've sold in a week they are bigger than the Beatles.

Rodgers
30-01-2006, 13:09:52
They just need this week to carry on for another 10 years andnthey will be! ;)

Drastically overhyped headline nonetheless, especially as the Beatles established albums as common currency in popular music.

a bold claim, but i'm not enough of a music history buff to say otherwise. still headlines are hype, they're effectively adverts for stories

for my part only heard bet you look good on the dance floor and like that a lot. i finally got round to downloading the album the other day so should give it a listen this week.

They're not as good as the other band beginning 'Arc' who were getting bucketloads of press attention last year - The Arcade Fire.

Funko

protein's band Rebus are being managed by the same management as the arcade fire.

having listened to the monkeys through a couple of times yesterday i'm tending to agree with walrus feeder

Really? I can't stand the fucking Arcade Fire, I don't see the appeal at all. They're like Anthony & the Johnsons, everybody buys the albus 'cos everyone else says it's amazing, but behind closed doors nobody plays it because in reality it's just's far far too whiney and pussy. Even Belle and Sebastian could take Arcade Fire in a fight...

King_Ghidra
01-02-2006, 10:31:48
well i am proud to say that not only behind closed doors but behind open doors and under god's blue sky i have played the arcade fire, i think it's superb

funny you should mention B&S though, i'm a big fan

anyway, i couldn't give a shit either way about who's a pussy, i'll take the arcade fire over the arctic monkeys any day of the week based on the music

there are definitely a good 3-4 really good tracks on the AM album, but the bad ones are nothing special at all. at their best the lyrics are great social commentary, at their worst they're just bland (viz. the 'red light indicates doors are closed' track). musically the poor tracks are just damn boring derivative crap. and the singer's voice is badly exposed for what it is on several of the tracks

I'm a big Belle & Sebastian fan too, and would probably rate their Dog On Wheels ep as one of the best by any band I know. I'm not sure why I mentioned that fight bit really...

Anyway, fair enough, if you prefer Arcade Fire to Arctic Monkeys I'm not going to tell you you're wrong. One thing is certain though, the Son of Dork album blows both bands away.

the new strokes album is pretty good i reckon, maybe a lacking a bit of oomph in places

Debaser

Yeah, totally, I don't know if 14 tracks is too many, I've listened to the first half way more than the second, but Heart In A Cage and You Only Live Once are wicked.

The new Graham Coxon album is really good too.

I like B&S and the Arcade Fire, but I do find that after listening to them for any period of time, I have to put on some scandanavian pagan metal to remasculate myself.

Just seen the video for the Arctic Monkeys' "When The Sun Goes Down" on TV and the opening minute does remind me of the song Westside by Athlete.

The Arctic Monkeys annoy me. Here you are waiting for another McFly or The Bravery and then you get a manufactured band that's vaguely decent. What's the world coming to?

manufactured? how so? i wasn't aware of that

It's just illicit rumour-mongering. They're probably "real" at some level.

Scabrous Birdseed

I think what I mostly have against the arctic monkeys is the fact that their name is utterly poo. It's one that should have been rejected after five seconds during the traditional stoned brainstorming session, but inexplainably lingered to the end. Like Sonic Undermind.

They'll never be a historic great band with that name.

I dont think they are going to be some legendary band, but they are pretty good - nothing to really knock about them - excellent set.

They arent whiners ala Coldplay - more like Hard-Fi or similar.

as i see today that the AM album comes in at #38 on Uncut's list of best debut albums ever i would just like to reiterate how fucking average this album is. i've had it on me ipod since i dl'ed it and it is now gathering playlist dust in a big way.

velvet underground at #1 btw:

Almost refreshing to see them consider anything pre-1980 that isn't The Beatles or The Stones.

Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor is a decent track, and the lyrics to Fake Tales of San Francisco always make me laugh, but the rest of the album is boring.

I know jack about music, though.

Oh come on, Velvet Undergound & Nico is easily the most heavily canonised album ever by the indiemusic press.

I think the AM album is pretty decent and I still listen to it every now and then. No really poor tracks, and several very nice ones, and one of the better albums that have recently come out.

I'm in agreement with Bas, the album is great.

AM have a single coming out c. august called 'leave before the lights come on'. is this a piss-take or is it really part of some kind of concept career where the entire band exists purely to document every single aspect of going out on the piss.

i can see the album line-up now:

'When you mates come round and you watch big brother and have a drink before you go out'
Double vodka red bull'
'taxi cabs are really expensive aren't they'
'I bought a kebab'
etc.

Surely whoever writes the lyrics has something more to say about britain other than that people go out to nightclubs?

Funko
10-07-2006, 15:14:30
Damn, that's potentially the concept of my new band I think. :nervous:

i bought the album. when i'm through listening to the hits 10 times each, i will listen to the whole and report a little something.
and credit cards are evil things. i bought htat, queens of the stone age lullabies to paralyze and caesars paper tigers and before i realized i was with a 40 euros bill.

These two have already been mentioned in that Red Lights Indicate Doors Are Secure tune from the first album.

I'm looking forward to hearing:

(Can't Get My) Key In The Door
It's 4AM And Our Mam's Waiting Up

Just wait till the third album

"Groucho Club Membership Running Out"
"Blimey, Isn't Coke expensive Down Ere?"
"My new best mate, Keith Allen"
"London:Its Not Sheffield"
"Met Bar Blues"
"Travelling On A Train Thats Under The Ground (Their So Modern Down Ere)"

And that album will be recorded by Alex Turner and his Arctic Monkey All-Star band, with him being the only surviving original member, and hideous array of rent-an-indie-hero's backing him. Noel Gallagher will play on the album for sure, as will Mani and John Squire. It will be shit. I will download it regardless, then never listen to it.
