Tonnes of views on the thread I recently started on whether it should become a criminal offence to smack your own child. Seems enough interest then to set up a poll!

It's banned already isn't it, and has been for forty years?

Oh you mean in England.

Yep.

It's assault, and ought to be illegal anyway.

I don't think alcohol should be banned, and it has even fewer redeeming features than smacking kids. But I suspect that hitting your kid out of love shouldn't be counted as violence. I'm for it.

Apart from helping you live longer, reduce your blood pressure, reduce your risk of blood clots, and have cancer-preventing anti-oxidants?

I thought that was just wine..

I thought hard spirits increased your blood pressure

I wonder how many crimes are committed whilst people are so drunk they're out of control?

While I do drink alcohol, I also recognise that the world would be a better place if it was never used.

Fah. Nonsense. Just because some people get silly with it doesn't mean its benefits should be overlooked.

Anyway, how many people votiing in favour of smacking kids genuinely believe kids will grow up delinquent without it?

I believe that some will..

My guess is that children who're smacked regularly are more likely to grow up delinquent.

Not necessarily because of the actual effects of smacking but because it's something that's practiced to a greater extent by those low in the social order. Generally, us wishy-washy non-smackers tend to be upper middle class and we grow up to be eccentric enfant terrible artists, not delinquents.

I personally believe if you'd been belted a few times you would have turned out better :p

You just managed to list every single benefit to drinking certain types of alcohol--all of which can be better found in non-alcoholic foods and drinks--while simultaneously ignoring its negative effects--many of which effectively negate the few positive benefits it shows. Well done. We'll make a media whore of you yet.

Cool. Meanwhile I'll carry on drinking my 1-2 glasses of red wine a day until you try convincing me it's a bad idea. I'm pretty confident that you won't.

Nowt wrong with a smack on the arse. When my dad wasn't about, mum used to get the wooden spoon out. Just waving it usually did the trick, until one day my brother got it round the bum and it broke. the spoon I mean, and he just laughed at mum, she started laughing and the spoon stayed in the spoon pot.

I have a hard time believing that somebody as clever as you actually thinks alcohol is good for you, but in any case, I really don't care.

It is good for you, if you use the right stuff and use it right.
