Note to all-

LWP is a two-part process- a CD exchange, and written feedback on it. If you think you can't get it together to write a few words on the tracks before the article deadlines, drop out now because otherwise you'll just be letting down people are putting time and money into this.

The theme is "Songs of Innocence" and "Songs of Experience".

What you need to do-

Burn two songs onto a CD. The first is for "Songs of Innocence", while the second is for "Songs of Experience". There are no time limits on length of tracks, but don't take the piss.

Send them to me in suitably safe packaging, enclosing STAMPED self-addressed packaging to receive a CD back.

(Exception for non-UK participants- in your case, just get your CD's to me. I'll handle the return postage and packaging. Don't bother sending money or stuff, but if the guilt gets too much just send me saucy pictures of your girlfriends)

PM me if you need my address. If you've had my address before, rest assured I haven't moved in the last 10 years.

Deadline for receipt of CD's is Saturday 25th February. That should give time for all air-mail packs to reach me.

Any queries? Just ask.

Address again...don't know if I still have it.

Are you a tit or an ass man?

Probably a spleen guy or something weird like that...

Funko
25-01-2006, 10:06:56
That should be fine.

I don't have anything sensible like an address book so I'll need your address again. :D

Lazarus and the Gimp
26-01-2006, 17:28:53
Suggestion- add a "bonus" track or two to your CD's, letting me know which CD they're for. There's no guarantee they'll be used, but they'll come into use if the finished versions are ofensively short.

I do have a sensible thing like an address book, but I leave it at home in a locked box, so I can't actually read it for half of the year. Could you send me the address again and I'll get sorted.

I don't have any real problem with emo per se. It's just the more overtly snivelling ones that make me want to punch people.

I'm hoping I can still get them over to you in time...is 2/25 still the deadline?

Lazarus and the Gimp
15-02-2006, 19:16:55
Carrying it over that would delay it by two weeks, as the next weekend is tied up. If it looks like you can't contribute I'll still send you a CD.

Parcel received, Mr Wombat.

Funko

Laz...do you still have my address?

Also, check out Swedish act Jose Gonzalez for a Nick Drake vibe.

And Portland, Oregon's Pink Martini is coming to France, Switzerland and the Barbican in London.
Not gloomy alt rock fare, but worth looking into if you want to hear the musical soul of positive Portland vs. the angry punk that comes out of here or the (most likely) despised emo of Dand Warhols, et al.

I'd really love to still get a CD and give feedback (can pop a SAE in the post to you no problem too.)

Don't worry about an SAE- you deserve a freebie after the hassle.

The first batch of CD's are in the post.

Apologies- Scabby, while I put two of your tracks on, I'm afraid I accidentally missed off your favourite. Sorry about that- by way of recompense you get the bonus free DVD.

Eklektikos- I think I got your tracks the wrong way round, but I think it works better that way. Worship the glitch.

"Songs of Innocence" is a bit odd, proving we have wildly differing interpretations of what "innocence" is. "Songs of Experience", on the other hand, rocks like a motherfucker. Enjoy.

The overseas ones (to Scabby, Bas, Mad Squirrel, devilmunchkin and BGH) went out today. By usual standards they should arrive within the next 2-3 weeks.

Right- who's compiling the first review?

Funko
15-03-2006, 17:23:56
I'll do it. Assuming it's 2-3 weeks I'll be back from NY by then.

10th April?

Kitsuki
15-03-2006, 17:26:56
I dont 100% know how this works - do we eventually get to know exactly what all the songs are and who submitted them...?

As before, I need to listen and re-listen to music, but been enjoying experience - will move onto innocence soon too. :)

Lazarus and the Gimp
15-03-2006, 19:58:38
We'll probably split this into four parts, with seven tracks to cover in each.

For the first part, write a short review of each of the tracks 1-7 on "Innocence" and PM them to the compiler. If any of them are yours, just tell the compiler that track (insert number here) is yours.

If any tracks in that section are yours, the compiler will PM you the comments other people made about them. Write a short piece about what the track is, and anything else you want to say about it, them PM it back to the compiler.

The compiler will then publish the article. Then we repeat the process for the next 7 tracks.

Lazarus and the Gimp

How many people ended up submitting tracks in the end, and how many of these tracks are "bonuses"?

Funko
16-03-2006, 09:08:25
Could we have a list of contributors as well? To help those who like to guess who submitted a song?

Lazarus and the Gimp
16-03-2006, 17:20:39
Contributors were me, Scabby, Funko, IW, BGH, KG, Mad Squirrel and Eklektikos. The first 7 tracks on Innocence and the first 8 tracks on Experience are "official tracks" (in other words, one each- the reason why there's only 7 official tracks on Innocence is due to me missing off Scabby's) while the remaining tracks on each CD are bonus tracks submitted by Scabby, Eklektikos, IW and myself.

got mine in the mail yesterday. I'll listen to it over the weekend and work on a review. Can i just write it how I want or do you have a specified format?

Lazarus and the Gimp
21-03-2006, 19:14:43
A typical example-

Track 1- This is a sickeningly derivative piece of morbid and self-obsessed nonsense that reminds me of Trent Reznor attempting to force a live weasel up his own back passage. The chorus is good and I like the way the guitars come in just after the authentic samples of the gas chamber door slamming shut in Belsen, but the rest of it sent me into a light coma for several days. It's definitely an Eklektikos track.

Track 2- Mine!

Track 3- Ooooh! Is that a Kazakhstani armpit-flute? Nice.

Lazarus and the Gimp

It's interesting so many people thought "man!" when submitting an experience track and "young woman!" when submitting an innocence track, that's all.

but that's the music industry/world isn't it, pretty powerless young girls and dirty powerful old men

I think it's just as likely a reflection on the gender distribution across innocence/experience themes within people's music collections than any (sub)conscious choice.

One of those "innocent young women" should have been on the £experience" CD.

Hello all. I'd like to get involved in LWP X if possible - assume I just keep an eye on the music forum first to see when things get moving?

Also - I am most likely being very dumb here - but where's LWP VIII? Number 7 is on the front page and unless my grasp of roman numerals is even more basic than I thought, this thread is for number 9...

Also also finally - is there any way I can get hold of earlier LWP compilations? My musical tastes need broadening badly, and this sounds an ideal way of achieving that.

Right.

Theoretically I have sent everyone all the comments I've so far received for their songs. I might have sent you comments that apply to someone elses song, in which case it could be quite amusing.

What I need you to do now is read them, and then write whatever you want to appear in the article about your song. Minimum being the name of the song and who it's by but feel free to slag off (in an entertaining manner) anyone who said your song was shit. Then send your comments back to me.

K_G is going to be in New York until Friday but if you could get responses back to me as soon as possible I can get things set up ready to publish ASAP.

I doubt that any of you truly comprehend what a deadline is.

Let's do deadlines on a sliding scale from now on:
1)students submit first

2)then "professionals" who have desks

3)then "professionals" who don't have desks, oversee the unloading of freight, merchandising of a 50 million $ big box retail establishment, prevention of loss through procedural error and external/internal theft, daily sales in CD's/DVD's/console gaming (hardware and software) and also PC gaming, Performance Counselling Records (same acronym as Post Count Reduction and just as depressing to be on either end of the equation). Oh...and add @1.5 hour commute, two pre-school aged children and a loving patient wife who has placed razor wire and voodoo curses in the near proximity of the PC room.
