I've just been reading up on the history of the East Indies. You laid-back, dope-smoking Dutchies used to be a right old pack of rapacious bastards, didn't you? What went wrong?

All I know about Dutch history is that Tromp and DeRuyter gave the Royal Navy a good deal of trouble. There was another commercial/military confrontation in the 1780s, and then came Napoleon.

The military highlight of Holland is when in 1667 DeRuyter sailed up the river Medway with a few ships, and captured and destroyed the pride of the Royal Navy at the dockyards of Chatham.

That and butchering a 100.000 inlanders of Aceh are the biggest achievements. All in the name of trade. :D

Until 1810, when sneaky Captain Cole nipped in and whipped a load of trees and soil off to India to start new plantations. Bye-bye basis of Dutch imperialism.

The staggering thing is that while the Dutch were brilliant at capturing the Spice Islands, they were utter crap at actually making money out of them. By the 1790's, despite having their monopoly the Dutch East India Company was over 12 million guilders in debt.

Drekkus

They made loads of money out of them, but in the end the upkeep of the entire multinational, with a whole private army and fleet, became to expensive. It did exist almost 200 years, something the current top companies still have to prove.

He South African author. He very good. Lots of shagging and fighting and stuff. The Dutch tend to get a good kicking in the dingding in his earlier novels.

Very old-school thrillers. All packed full of ludicrous alpha-male stereotypes.
