on my practice one I got 2310

so I was somewhat disappointed by the results

umm, I skipped a grade (And not because the teachers didn't want to see me)

Like SAT but what you take to get into grad school if you want to study science.

I only took the ACT. Those bastards made us take it really early on a Saturday morning. Like high school students can function then.

You took the Australian Capital Territory? The capital of our nation, the biggest congregation of sanctimonious paper shufflers in the country? And nobody noticed?

:gotit: Oh, hang on. Keep them please.

The ACT: http://www.act.org/aap/

It's like the SAT except with lower numbers. The range is from 1 (ie how could someone so fucking stupid as you even make it to high school) to 32 (ie you are an incredible fucking genius ... that will never get laid).

I took the SAT my junior year of highschool (did not take it my senior year)

I didn't do that great, got a 1430 (roughly equal in the two, which shows I didn't do too great on the math ones)

also, I got a BA from Gustavus Adolphus College (Honors Physics and Mathematics (two majors))

How did you do in the physics subject test, Jon? That's far more important (but sort of moot by this stage in your life as well)

64 percentile or something like that?

That was also less then I expected.. (Based upon the practice tests I took).

I'm bugging you, Jon. I don't think those tests prove much of anything. I've always been really good at taking them. Doesn't mean that I'm smarter than you, any more than you beating me in a video game would prove that.

The important part of the GRE general for pure "intelligence" as well as can be defined is the Analytical, anyway (before they bastardised it into a writing section).

The quantitative section is a joke and the verbal section is just vocabulary and grammar, both of which can be mastered by people with barely better than average "intelligence".

And the GRE physics subject test isn't even a good measure of a physics background. But a 64 is nothing to scoff at. If you renormalise that to US physics undergrads it's probably more like an 85 or a 90. It's certainly better than the average American entering the Phys&Astro graduate program at Hopkins

What I can't stand is when I ask the people here what their GPA was in undergrad. I get answers like 3.7+ from everybody. Then I ask them what they got on the GRE subject, and they tell me numbers in the 40s

Those kinds of tests are surely supposed to measure how well you're able to handle education rather than your intelligence? You know, how quickly you're able to read and draw conclusions fron texts, analyse simple statistical data, understand stated problems, etc? (Well, at least ours is. But that's not meant for graduate level.)
