As for cucumbers:

The Press: EU regulations mean the end of ... curved cucumbers ... Greengrocers must conform to the myriad of rules covering size, length, colour and texture of fruit and vegetables.
(The Times, 19 December 2003)

The Facts: ... Cucumbers do not have to be straight. There are grading rules, which were called for by representatives from the industry to enable buyers in one country to know what quality and quantity they would get when purchasing a box, unseen, from another country. Nothing is banned under these rules: they simply help to inform traders of particular specifications. The EU Single Market rules are identical to pre-existing standards set down both by the UN/OECD and the UK.

Proposed Conservative tax cut that would lead to "huge cuts in public services", according to Tony Blair: 4 billion

Money given away by Tony Blair this weekend to subsidise eastern European farmers: 7 billion.

The british rebate is just as retarded as the huge agricultural subsidies are. Kill them both.

He's giving that rebate away as a negotiating tool to reduce the whole EU budget...

Anyway, maybe he's planning to raise taxes to cover the deficit. ;)

Rebate was a stupid word to use. Even with the full rebate we were still paying more than pretty much anyone.

you're the richest, so you should pay the most.

"pretty much anyone" suggests someone was paying more? In europe only Germany has a bigger economy than us so that makes sense if it was just them paying more?

Drekkus

pay more in total or per capita?

Can't find current stats.

Found this from 99 that says that (as expected) Germany is by far the biggest contributor.

Netherlands

The Netherlands is another supporter of Germany's reform drive. The country is the second-biggest net contributor to the EU budget, and hopes to negotiate a reduction of its payments.

so just after at least 6 years of paying way way too much we get a reduction. wooohooooooooo

It's also really hard to tell what the economic benefits of being part of the EU have been, very debatable etc.

We could have been making more back than we've been spending.

Subsidies for farmers in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia cost 7 billion?

"Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia"

That's northern Europe, is it not? Maybe Lithuania can count as central...

If we reduced the budget to zero then there would be no need for anyone to get a rebate

It should have been done at the same time or not at all. Now the UK has no leverage.
