My dad retired from diplomatic service last year and he's very interested in international affairs, so I'm thinking of getting him a subscription to some sort of politics magazine for what the americans apparently now call "winter".

Two I've been looking into have been The Guardian Weekly and Le Monde Diplomatique's english-language edition, I want a slightly left-leaning (but not too left-leaning) magazine dealing with mainly international issues in an interesting way. I've no experience of either though, so I don't know if they're good enough or not.

What would you recommend?

I would recommend Le Monde Diplomatique.
Dealing with media and foreign news it's a constant topic/complaint how much we are "dependent" on english and american papers/agencies for news that don't directly involve us or our surroundings.

The main disturbance is that they are coloured in a very specific way in the way they interpret news/ view news. You know the communciations theory that pluralism doesn't exist if anything that goes oiutside the norm is ignored? Something like that.

The Guardian is a good alternative to most of those publications/agencies. However I havenoticed repeadedly a lot of short comings. Sometimes it bends willfully or through ignorance facts to get to the point that it wants. No matter that I may sympathize with the points it tries to make, it irks me evey time I notice a disstortion in the way it presents things. It can hide some truths and let others shine, I have found it to delibarately mislead etc.

That takes something out of its value but that's not to say it is worthless, it just needs improvement IMO.

Le Monde Diplomatique, has a distinctive different approach to things. It views the world through a very different perspective than most british or american mainstream media do. That perspective is well established and has been there a long time. So for some really "fresh" and new approach to things, I'd reccomend that. And most importantly I have not found it to bend the truth.

Of course it depends on what your dad likes to read. Most people will read the newspapers that agree with their premade opinions and are atuned to enjoying only those.

My Dad likes good analysis in longish articles mostly I think, he loves reading The International Herald Tribune when on holiday.

Any other magazines I could be looking into?

I read that magazine when in college -- it's good, but a bit dry.

Would the economist be a too obvious pick? It's something I'd naturally associate the IHT with since I also like to read both. Very international minded, pro free-market and socially liberal.

He's a bit too left-wing for The Economist.

It is very socially liberal though, and even if he disagrees with it, it is extremely well written and covers many obscure foreign issues in countries I often don't even recognise the name of...

Wouldn't discount it as a good pick. :)

if he likes to read long articles
scientific periodical journals on foreign affairs (published by universities) are an alternative for media. they are more in depth but they lack in the actuality sector. i don't remember the title of any though. they are possibly more expensive too unless you're a member of the academic community.
