definitely the best ad on tv right now

very uplifiting, i sing along merrily now. how pleased was i when i switched over from the end of the advert on sky sports xtra last night to a channel that had just started showing it :D

for the ignorant foreigners:

http://www.honda.co.uk/ (click on 'Discover Honda's Impossible Dreams' and then 'watch the tv ad' :))

Yeah, that is a great ad. I saw it for the first time last night. Flicking between football channels?

Great advert. The song, for me, has been tarnished. It's part of Direct Line's hold music and I spend about 12 months of my life calling them 10 times a day when I worked at Esure.

the song's great, the seventies driver dude is cool, and i like the way that he gets progressively faster vehicles until the climax

the bit where he is on the fast bikes and then the racing cars is wicked, love the gear change in the racing car

That one is brilliant. It's far better than the gay hippie ad on the cleaner diesel engines from last year.

I can't believe that ad won the Cannes Lions Grand Prix...

mr.G
07-12-2005, 13:05:37
how popular is honda in th UK?
I do think the ad is nice but in our great country Honda does not have the Cool / good / not for the nerd name.

No, when it got to the end I did think... oh, shame it's for Honda.

i don't think funko is right about honda's image

the honda s2000 is a pretty popular sporty 2-seater, the preulde and civic are popular sporty saloon/hatches

honda has some nice styled cars poplar with younger people, don't know what this older people bollocks is about

MattHiggs

Honda Civics are linked to the young Asain community around here. They usually come with added aluminium spoilers and 'tasteful' alloys.

It's like the "skodas are shit" thing, an old cliche that doesn't necessarily reflect the present situation.

funko, i don't think that's true either, i don't think honda has any image problems here in the uk (except with you apparently)

i don't understand why you would feel disappointed at the end because it was honda?

how have you formed this weird image of the company? did you just ignore nice cars like the nsx or the stuff they've done in forumla 1 or superbike racing?

Funko

They originally got their reputation for being really efficient, reliable, great safety record but not that quick and fairly average looking. ie. Perfect for old people.

How comes you two even have opinions on cars? I have a negligable interest and I am a driver. I don't understand why anybody would take an interest if they didn't drive. Its like me discussing models of guitar or something.

Obviously, anyone can have an opinion on anything but I was particularly surprised by KG's knowledge of different models. I don't have a clue what you're talking about.

Some x-posts there. I didn't think I was being radical. Seems MrG has the same perception from Holland?

Every time I've seen a new Honda mentioned on a TV car show recently it's been accompanied with a "trying to shed their old people image" editorial line. I thought this ad was continuing that.

Like I said, I don't think it reflects their current state.

(and certainly not motorbikes which are never for old people!)

Maybe I've totally invented this but I don't know why/how I'd have done that.

the simple answer is i have played a lot of gran turismo :D

and there are many things i don't give a shit about and wouldn't argue with funko about, but as it happens in this case i see honda as a great brand and don't understand funko's opinion of it (which seems very much focused on the consumer car aspect and completely ignores honda's rep in the world of bike and other engine manufacture)

Funko

I've played Gran Turismo a couple of times but never in a Civic...

I have a Honda Civic. Its very much a "oh, grow up" car for me. I sold my Jeep and got a Civic in grad school, just before getting married.

I miss my Jeep.

Next one will be either another Civic or a CR-V (SUV for old people)

I always thought Honda were a bit of an old people's car too. Like Volvo- stable and reliable but not exciting. I couldn't say where or why I've picked that up, but I have.

I like the ad though. More because of the seventies man than the concept I think.... The idea of taking a classic track and overlaying an action sequence is hardly new but its at least done with some class and originality in this ad.

They're not seen as a kind of glamour brand like BMW or Volkswagen, but they're far from dull compared to the likes of Vauxhall or Nissan, and much less company car-ish than Rover or Ford. The Civic is probably has an unfair reputation for being an old persons car because you can buy it in lots of unusual (for cars) pastely type colours, but performance wise they're more than capable in their field. And when was stable and reliable ever a bad thing for a car to be?

Nills Lagerbaak

I think the Honda civic is great. It looks sporty and cool.

MattHiggs
08-12-2005, 10:33:48
Nissan have made amazing sports cars: NISSAN SKYLINE RB27 and currently the 350Z. Also Ford have made the GT and the RS200.

Debaser
08-12-2005, 10:41:08
True, but Nissan are more well known in this country for Micra's and Almera's, both incredibly dull cars. How many Ford GT's did you see on your way into work today? Probably none, but I bet you saw a fair few Focuses. I was talking about brand perception and awareness rather than sporting pedigre...

MattHiggs
08-12-2005, 10:50:32
Yeah, I don't disagree:

Ford - Huge reputation for being unreliable pieces of crap.

Rover - Old man/woman car.

Honda - meh.... Zzzzzzz

Vauxhall - ZZzzzzz

So what's a cool brand?

i think maserati is kinda cool but way to expensive, for a normal car i would vote for Lancia.

I think there are no negative thoughts over a lancia.

MattHiggs

Cool brands:

Audi and Aston Martin.

Lancia's were great cars, like the first Audi Quattro.

I don't know how you could define cool though. BMWs make awesome cars but they're just so common, every middle manager has one.

BMW is a nice car but has a bit of a associalness in the way they are driven, at least that's in Holland.

Your all fucking mad!!!!

Lancia HF integrale fastest point to point car built at one point, rots like an absolute cunt as do most italian builds.

Skyline RB27???!!!! Does that exist, skyline's come in various tastes non of which are i believe an RB27.

They do an RB20 RB25 and RB26 all straight sixes.

Aston Martin can't really fault although the DB9 volante is a piece of shit. Expensive desirable piece of shit at that.

Honda.............old mans car???!!!!

KG already mentioned, the NSX a true supercar, the prelude in its various guises although the last one was a bit of a dog looks wise. The entire Type R range oh and while we are at it, i'm pretty sure they were the first to perfect variable valve timing using 2 cam profiles. Something im sure your cap wearing grandad would be most impressed with.

Can't believe no one has mentioned the 911, a car which has single handedly held porsche in the market, and it still has the same lines it did 30 years ago.

The ford GT latest has been an absolute dog reliability wise, even clarkson who thinks it's the best thing since sliced bread has to admit it has spent more time away having faults sorted than it's actually been on his drive.

The RS200 only came about because ford motorsport changed direction they wanted to go in, they had already developed an 1800 engine for fitting into a clubman type car for single model racing, but the arse fell out of it, so they decided to go down the rallying route as the escorts of the time were getting walloped by the new audi and other 4 wheel drive manufacturers.

So the RS200 is really a bastard child born out of necessity rather than anything else, the project was nearly scrapped about 5 times when they had problems getting the prototype produced.

mr.G

It's a cool brand, and i hate porsches but you have to give the designer some kudos for coming up with a car that has a life span of 40 years.

Admittedly the first incarnations where a bit exciting handling wise, but now the engines, stability and handling are very well sorted. The new 911 Turbo S is an awesome machine.

Not a nissan engine matt, it's a stroked RB26, had the pistons changed to increase capacity but it is still an RB26

Notice the casting on the cam belt cover.
