The Linux distribution for wireless routers:

http://openwrt.org/

I just bought a wireless router, and I like the idea of having a working Linux installation running on it. I haven't looked into it in-depth, but I understand that OpenWrt is much like the Linksys firmware, but more extensible and more up-to-date. Has anybody tried it, or heard anything about it?

Everyone I know has had no end of trouble with wireless routers, they've all had to compile their own drivers.

Not too sure I like the idea of creating a whole distro just for wireless routers though.

I'm down with compiling drivers (the thought of having gcc installed on a wireless router makes me smile, although I think you mean on the desktop). I can probably overcome adversities, I'm just wondering if it's worth it.

It turns out the question is moot, since I got the crummy Linksys WRT54G v5.0, which has half the memory of previous versions, and uses a chip that doesn't have free Linux drivers.
