I thought Colon was Belgian, not French.

Supposedly people used to only bath once a year. They thought bathing made you sick but the church actually said everyone was supposed to bath at least once a year before they go to Easter Mass. Some people would even get sewn into their long johns since they didn't want to have to take them off. Imagine the smell after a few months.

But of course, smell is something you get used to, which means people didn't really notice. Unless someone didn't bathe after the annual bathday, in which case they did notice the stench. Which brings us to the origins of witchhunting.

Washing is evil, it removes your natural oils and causes all sorts of problems.

A quick rub down with "The Sporting Times" is all you need.

Besides, humans still need odors to enhance social interaction and behavior :gasmaske:

I know what you're thinking: "but didn't witch-hunting only concern women?". Yes, but they dealt with the smelly men by sending them to the holy land, as Jerusalem reputedly had the best bathing facilities around.
