To Kieran (Tuesday's letters) and anyone else wishing to compare things with the size of a football pitch: Could you please state which ground you are using as a comparison? The Laws of the Game give dimensions that result in an area of between 4050 and 10800 square metres. Even an international pitch can vary by at least 25% in size (6400 to 8250 square metres). Also, the distance of the Moon from the Earth varies between 363,104km and 405,696km, a difference of more than 10%. And a double-decker bus is between 10.5 and 10.9 metres in length.

That explains why people use double decker buses to measure things

I used a maximally sized football pitch - 10800m2, although this possibly should be altered to an international standard size.

My London Bus figure was 27 feet 6 inches, as per the classic Routemaster, rather than the 30 feet of some of the later models.

I scorn anyone using earth to moon distances, since that is clearly an equally unintuitive measure, useless on most scales, and as noted, grossly variable. However, I do note that my Mount Everest figure is out of date, since the mountain has recently been found to have shrunk.

Can you add the link into your signature? I always forget it when I need it.

It's in Noisy's signature.

A signature makes my posts 150% bigger. Unnecessarily. :(

That's alright, there aren't many of them.

With no signature you have to post more to make your quota

I was going for a minimalistic approach to posting inches. Maybe I should go back to an expansive avatar, multi-line signature and all.
