I recently bought a pile of books at a "fill a carrier bag for forty kronor" (3, $5) sale-off at the local library. For some reason, now a distant hazy memory, three of them were about flags.

Anyway, I was looking at the coats-of-arms and seals of a bunch of countries and some of them are seriously weird. Puerto Rico (yes-it's-not-a-country-really), for instance:

What's up with that one?

Methinks the puerto rican one is actually spanish. The F and I are Ferdinand and Isabella, the spanish king and queen that reunited spain, after occupation from the moors.

No, no, not the lamb. I mean, the fancy yoke! The device (which means "John is his name"! The crowned letters "F" and "I"! The thing with the arrows! The insanely complicated flag in the fringe which doesn't occur anywhere else ever!
