Are there any good spaceship combat games out there? I used to be addicted to X-Wing and TIE Fighter, but those sort of things seem thin on the ground now.

I tried X, but it bored me. I want something fast, accessible and fun.

Freelancer got good reviews when it came out a year or two back.

/edit: it got a favourable reaction on this very forum too...

Freelancer was a blast and should be bargain bin now.

It has some issues with the crap storyline and the repetitive missions in the MP, but the space combat was very well polished.

I'm going to have to play it again when I get a chance.

Not looked at x-3, it seems like they have made some progress on some of the features but its still heavily biased towards economic empire building. And it seems to need a pig of a machine to run

Freespace 2 was a good one.
the mouse driven flight in freelancer was new and different, lots of fun

I bought Freelancer. It kicks arse, even though using a mouse feels wrong.

Freespace 2 works and looks great on XP if you set the emulation for an earlier version of windows. As a matter of fact, I was playing it a couple of weeks ago.

It's funny how these games haven't aged much. If you were to just update the graphics on a hoary old classic like "TIE Fighter" it would still kick arse.

I've been dying for someone to re-do one of the TIE Fighter games. It's time. Someone get it done.

X-wing alliance still ooks pretty good if you can find it in the bargain bins

Baging bin? Fuck that. I own it.

I find myself wondering why every character in the "Freelancer" cut-scenes is staggeringly camp. Does this become explained in the huge gay sub-plot I'll encounter shortly?

Yeah, well at least they are not as deformed as the characters in the X cutscenes...

When those characters show up in the cutscenes at all, rather then just a pair of eyes...

Of course, that's still better then King Hunchback in the Civ4 opening movie.
