Kerio Personal Firewall is being discontinued on December 31, 2005.I seem to recall a certain penguin :) recommending Kerio (http://www.kerio.com/kpf_download.html) to me some time back, when I was complaining that Zone Alarm seems to be taking a lot of resources.

I wandered over too the site again recently as my girlfriend's PC uses the free MS XP firewall, and seemed rather slow on the Net, so though it might be a wise idea to get a respected 3rd party one installed instead, just in case something was going on that shouldn't be.

Saw the above on the download page. Figured that not only was it probably not a good idea to download for her (even assuming I can find the hidden link to the free version) and even that I might need to change my own, soon.

Just wondered what the consensus of opinion was re free firewall software.

Anyone any opinions ? Cheers.

I heard something about it recently, but I don't remember where.

I use Agnitum's Outpost V3. Built in spyware checker.

I'm having a helluva time getting it to let me play Battlefireld 2 online though.

The trial lasts 30 days though, so you could see if it's what you're after.

Sygate is much more beginner friendly.

Easiest of all is a NAT hardware firewall, usually built into a router. Stealths all ports and takes zero resources.

Cheers. May check it out.

Seems if I want free, it's is Sygate, or a return to Zone Alarm, looking at this page. (http://www.firewallguide.com/freeware.htm)

I believe that Sygate is trialware, though I may be mistaken. I liked it enough to buy it. Before that, I was using an old version of Kerio.
