A teenager is being treated for text messaging and e-mail addiction in what is believed to be the first case of its kind in Scotland.

The 19-year-old from Paisley, who did not want to be identified, said texting was like "a game of ping-pong".

In the space of a year, 'Steven' spent 4,500 on text messaging.

He was sending about 700 texts a week and resigned from his job after bosses found out he had sent 8,000 e-mails in one month.

Realising there was a problem the public sector union Unison referred him to a counselling service where he is still being treated.

Counsellors at the RCA Trust in Paisley said they have never seen anything like it in 25 years of treating addictions.

What does it mean if I think he's a hero?

takes two to text surely, he must have been in conversation with some other people? unless he was just bombarding random strangers...

That's what I was wondering.

and does 1 email to 8,000 people count?

Gary

Exactly. Takes one to text, and any number to receive.

A couple of dozen friends, a dozen texts to each during the course of the day.

Can't be arsed to do the maths but it'd add up over the month.

to 8000 people with a 35 mb attachement

No more a waste of bandwidth than this site ;)

As an indication...

at my worst I make about 50 posts a day.

8000 e-mails in a month is like 266 a day!

Spam bot perhaps? Maybe he was sending out V--Ia-g-RA e-mails or something.

"On any one day, he was sending about 300 e-mails to his girlfriend. He was texting her every day and probably spending 20 to 30 a week on texts."

Mr Irvine said much of the problem ended when Steven split from his girlfriend.

Well, certainly the girlfriend's problem has ended...

He's probably the reason why Gmail was invented.

Over 2654.373669 megabytes (and counting) of free storage so you'll never need to delete another message.

We will see more and more of this and eventually it will just be another addiction. Its a simple socially acceptable activity that allows people susceptable to compulsive disorders to go overboard.

Like gambling without the social stigma or the broken legs from not paying your debts.

If I would be his now ex-gf, I'd certainly break his legs for sending me so many mails.

No, he should not.

They are full up on tards already.

BTW, wasn't it a Scottish guy who won the world speed texting thing last year or so? What is it with that country and mobile phones?

I sure hope Funko is getting the oh so subtle message about not being a smothering knob in this thread.
