Okay, here's the link to the Angband Challenge page. The Leaderboard is accessible through the link at the top of the page.

The Leaderboard should reflect the changes made recently to the scoring system. Rest assured that results have not changed significantly enough to have affected player rankings.

I've sent my character. It's up to Qaj to determine when the next challenge starts.

One warning on this one: Obey your thirst!

Another Vampire? Well, at least I know where the resist light and dark ring is now in 2.4.

Well, if no-one has any objections, I'll start the new Challenge now, due a fortnight on Wednesday.

I have a suggestion for the leaderboard (as if you haven't gotten enough). How about a point system?

The person with the highest level for a character gets the most points. The person with the lowest level for a character gets the least. Ties get the same.

The number of points can be determined by the number of participants to reflect competition. For example, if there are 5 players, then the highest ranking character will get 5 points. The second highest 4, the next 3 down to 1 (0 is too crippling for ranking the averages).

For Comso it would be like this:

1) MDA, CLevel 25 (6 points)
2) Mad Monk, CLevel 18 (5 points)
3) DaShi, CLevel 16 (4 points)
3) Qaj, CLevel 16 (4 points)
5) Sir Penguin, CLevel 15 (2 points)
6) Darkstar, CLevel 5 (1 point)

Thus, more difficult to level up characters like Comso or Amberite rangers won't lower your score if you place first each time.

I think a problem with that would be that the difference between each ranking being separated by 1 clevel and the top ranking being 20 clevels ahead of the competition wouldn't be reflected.

This is the same suggestion Darkstar got shot down for :)

As SP suggests, if the results between two players goes like this over four challenges:

P1 49 49 01 01
P2 01 01 02 02

in the "points for placings" system, the scores would be:

P1: 2 + 2 + 1 + 1 = 6
P2: 1 + 1 + 2 + 2 = 6

There's no reason players one and two should be equal, when P1 utterly trounced P2 in the first two rounds, wheras P2 beat P1 only marigannly in the second.

Under the "points for CLevel" scheme, the scores would be:

P1: 49 + 49 + 1 + 1 = 100
P2: 1 + 1 + 2 + 2 = 6

As it should be, player two really has to WORK to catch up to player one. This type of scoring system rewards perseverence and good play. It also encourages players to enter each round so that they don't fall behind.

One drawback I've considered is it DIScourages new people to enter after a few Challenges have occurred, since it's almost impossible to catch up to a consistently good player unless you're consistently at least TWICE as good.

So, thinking on the spur of the moment, I'm toying with the idea of grouping the Challenges into 5 rounds a piece, and declaring an overall winner, then beginning a new Leaderboard, thus giving stragglers a chance to start from scratch.

What think y'all?

The straggler says, "aye".

It shall be done. Challenge #15 will be the last of the Angband Round One Challenges. The player with the highest score at the end of Challenge #15 will be the overall winner, and we'll move on to Round 2.

Also, I've streamlined the Leaderboard page slightly. Gone are the average columns. Now there is only Score and Rank. As you can see more easily from the Score column, spots 1 and 2 are narrowly separated, as are 2 and 3, and 4 and 5. The final standing after the next Challenge are anyone's guess really.

The Mad Monk and Greg are overlapping. Otherwise, looks good. I support the level score now.

Challenge 15 would already be in your hands, but email is down. Internet access isn't, but email is. Its been a long time since I've seen this happen, but it shouldn't last long.

New leaderboard uploaded. Congrats to SP.

Round 2 of the Angband Challenge (Challenge #16) will begin in mid-June. That's right, I'm giving you 3 weeks off to go play Morrowind or Tropico or some such nonsense, and I can settle down and try to finish Planescape: Torment. I'll post an announcement prior to the round beginning (which, looking at the calendar, will probably be the 12th of June).

Which means that I will have to make a character that levels up quickly, because I have a big exam on June 25 :).

Shit, I've got nothing to do until NWN comes out. I guess I'll make my own character and send him down the pits. I've been wanting to experiment with a Mindflayer.
