The Thing.

The original was some crappy film about plants. The remake was a wicked gorefest with good music.

I was trying to think of that one, it's a great example.

Yeah, The Thing. Great remake. Good call protein.

Don't the French claim everything is a remake or based on one of their films?

They frequently are though.

"Attack on Precinct 13". The John Carpenter one, not the recent bastardisation.

Worst remake ever. The one noteworthy thing about it is that it killed Stallone's career.

I liked the Alfie remake. It was a lot better than it got credit for.

Dawn of the dead was a cool remake, the original was great too (classic 1970s bad special effects cheaply done, you can't beat that)

Which ones did you have in mind ?

Not the remake of 'Nikita', or 'Les Diaboliques', I think.

Nor the American version of the Franco-Dutch 'The Vanishing'.

Nor indeed the remake of 'La Cage Aux Folles', which was appallingly ham-fisted and gratingly obvious.

Cyrano de Bergerac (the Depardieu one)

Not the dodgy Steve Martin Roxanne - thus proving Fergus' point...

The Ring. I loved that film. The original was very good to mind.

The only good thing about the remade C&tCF was the bizarre 2001 bit. Oh, and the squirrels. Eveything else was toss. It's probably Tim Burton's worst film.

I havent' seen C&tCF, I was amazed to see in a TV debate on movies that in Italy the critics praise it as probaly the best quality 2005 movie

A french film called "The Pier", apparently consisting entirely of still pictures. I haven't seen it.

I had the misfortune to see this on tv in dublin. What a pile of shit. jude law's alfie is a pathetic, self-absorbed, whining little bitch who either shits on or gets shat on by everyone without eliciting in the viewer one shred of compassion for his situation. He makes staggeringly moronic comments about relationships as though he popped out of the womb the day before, despite being a serial ladykiller. The film itself lacks any kind of direction or pace and ends with a blistering whimper.

There is precisely one good moment in the entire thing: sienna miller looking like an absolute fox for 30 seconds.
