predictably perhaps - Coldplay, Travis, Oasis, Manic Street Preachers and Stereophonics provide the soundtrack to his life.

Very alternative (for a footballer), but wholly predictable.

I'm not sure why that's predictable for a footballer. You'd expect it to all be chart R&B (unless it was stuart pearce).

I think he was saying it was predictable for Michael Owen, but alternative for footballers in general.

Yes.

To clarify:

I was agreeing with novacane and disagreeing with the BBC.

I think my unintentional contradiction confused the point. ;)

Surely that's a list of commercial MOR rock bands? In a choice between chart R&B (alas a slowly dying genre, few worthwhile new artists have come out in the past few years*) and chart "indie", I know which I'd consider more edgy.

*Bizzarely, the only really groundbreaking new R&B producer is called Rich Harrison. What has PH been up to in his free time?

As edgyness contests go, that must rate slightly above "egg vs grapefruit".

It's not really to do with what's edgy or not, footballers are stereotypically more 'urban' and currently like R&B.

I would agree with you that current chart R&B is typically more interesting than many of those extremely dull mainstream guitar bands.
