Peter Diamandis, the man behind the $10m X-Prize for suborbital space travel, has brought forward his new initiative: the Rocket Racing League.

The RRL will see Grand Prix-style races between rocket planes, flown by top pilots through a "3D trackway" just 5,000ft (1,500m) above the ground.

:clueless:

Cool idea. Won't happen.

it's the first step to wipeout

Hmm, I saw this in Metro and immediately thought "wipeout", but sadly well need force-fields that can let a plane bounce off organic walls and along the ground at full speed before it'll happen.

This sounds wicked.

Although why is it different to the normal plane racing competition that was heavily advertised on TV recently?

normal plane racing competition? what normal plane racing competition?

Nills Lagerbaak
05-10-2005, 13:48:07
Yeah, what competition? And more importantly what adverts for said competition that we're supposed to have seen?

Funko

I don't know, it was something relatively local. There were adverts for it about every 15 minutes on every tv channel for a fortnight last month.

Those don't look like rocket planes to me

Funko

They aren't rocket planes but would that really make a huge amount of difference and if this is already up and running then why would doing a rocket plane one be that hard?

Nills Lagerbaak

Cos I think the track for the propsed one is perpendicular to the spectators, i.e. vertical straghts going up and down and into space maybe!

did you read fp's post at all?

you asked what the difference was and that is it

now go away

It's 3D (like the redbull one) but not vertical or space, max height is 5000ft according to the article

Personally I think Combat Rocket Racing League (CRRL) would be even more exciting. Lasers and shit.

Make the pilots come into the pits for new trousers?

Drekkus
05-10-2005, 16:56:33
Better not come in their trousers

King_Ghidra
05-10-2005, 17:10:41

MoSe

you better disarm the pit before falling in it

seriously, are you talking about those '50s movies where you see Bee planes http://www.aerospaceweb.org/question/design/size/starr-bumble-bee.jpg
tightly bank around 4 pylons in a square?
