So I went out with a few friends on Saturday night and some how got into a conversation with a guy and his girlfriend. Things like that happen all the time so why should this be anything special? Anyway that couple left and apparently the guy's truck ran into some car and he drove off. Next thing I know the bouncers are saying they're going to call the cops on me if I don't tell them how to find the driver of the hit & run and they won't believe that I don't know them.

Long story short I had to wait for the cops, make a sworen statement, and had my night ruined all because of a 5 minute conversation with some strangers. Bloody hell.

that really sucks, but I guess they had to make sure

can't blame them for wanting to catch the guy/girl

I would have told them to fuck off and send th police to my house. They can write down my plate number as I run up the curb and send the bouncer running.

If that was here the bouncers would have had no rights to detain you...

Unless, your were dissenting against the war in Iraq. Then, it seems they can do anything they like.

What you got to remember is that hit and runs sometimes result in the victims dying later, even if they walked away from the accident.

Pain in the arse for you bro, but the situation could have resulted in something a lot heavier.

A case of hassle now, less hassle down the road?

Oh, that. That was nothing to do with terrorism laws. They just threw him out for heckling.

Just the labour party stewards acting like fascists.

it was claimed in the article posted here that he had been arrested under the terrorism laws

go and dig out the thread and re-read it

OMG, the whole fuss was that they used the terrorism laws?!? Did you not know that?

Funko

But not arrested by bouncers, they can't arrest people - FACT.

They won't read you your rights but picking someone up by their limbs is a form of arrest.

Nills Lagerbaak

Exactly.

Yeah, and they also have dubious legal grounds to do so. The last I read somene had filed an assault claim against the bouncers for that incident:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/4311686.stm

And the police (not the bouncers) only quoted the new terrorism act when he tried to re-enter the building. Which they later said was a mistake.

Anyway, I know what he's talking about now, but I didn't recognise the event from Nills' description.

citizen's arrest? I've never seen anyone attempt one though. Even when shop alarms go off the staff all stand by bemused these days. Country's going to the dogs etc...

You'd need to be very sure of what you are doing if you were to make a citizen's arrest, or you could end up being charged with kidnap.

But yes, depending on the circumstances that is a possibility.

They can here. Any citizen can if they witness a crime.

Citizen's Arrest

The police are not the only people with the power to make an arrest. Although there have been some highly publicised cases which suggest the power of the individual citizen is strictly limited, the law still recognises a citizen's arrest. So a member of the public may arrest someone who is committing an arrestable offence such as theft or assault, or suspects that such an offence has been committed. They are allowed to use reasonable force in doing so.

You have to be very careful, but heckling isn't an arrestable offence anyway.
