Damn. Still, he did some good stuff in his time.

I actually thought he'd died a few years ago and was later surprised to learn he was still alive.

04-10-2005, 10:17:04
Not as surprised as he would have been

"He was an object lesson to a lot of people who seek the limelight with half his talent."

Spot on Parky.

To Ronnie

yep, a massively talented man.

He seemed to go at the right time. There were loads of tributes to him in the last year, as if everyone knew he was going to die and that he needed to get the praise he deserves.

He always said how lucky he was. He must have died a very contented man.

I saw a letter in Viz from someone complaining about how he'd tried to rip them off when buying antiques from them for his shop

Porridge was great - didn't enjoy Open All Hours.

Most people die contented if they've effected a few lives for the better.- Ronnie will have effected thousands.

I hate the way they say "comic genius" about just about every popular comic that dies.

05-10-2005, 12:36:40
You're just jealous because no one ever called you that. ;)

Yes. that is annoying, this is one of the few cases it's deserved.

He used to write sketches for the show under fake names and post them to the offices. He wanted to see if the other members of the staff would like his ideas on their own merit, rather than because they knew it was him suggesting them. Classy.

how can anyone forget the sketch about Upper Bottom & Lower Bottom? Of course four candles is up there tooQuote taken from the Gruaniad's public tribute page

"Bad luck for the English football team captured by cannibals in Africa last week. By the time rescuers caught up with them, the cannibals had eaten the eleven players and were just warming up the subsitute."

Later on in the show we will be meeting a lady who likes Nicholas Parsons...

...and also a Parson who likes knickerless ladies.

They don't write 'em like that anymore.
