Why is it that the phrase below par means not good enough but being below par is actually a good thing in golf?

Good question, i don't know the answer but i thought you should see this:

100-0 protection --- Because golf is one of those things where you you want less than the target, where as in most things you prefer to exceed your target ?

Funko

Was par 30 golf balls or 26?

Nills Lagerbaak
29-09-2005, 14:03:13
Par is caculated on an average number of shots per hole.

Being below par, is simply being below average. Being below par in golf is taking less shots than the average. Makes perfect sense to me.

Because being good at golf is actually a bad thing?

Gary

Funko

Don't you hate literal minded people?

But taking less shots than average is better than average.

Japher
29-09-2005, 14:04:32
it has to do with the number of strokes to get you off course

Gary
29-09-2005, 14:05:24
It may be considered "better" but it's still "less than"

Gary
29-09-2005, 14:06:16
Could you stick to golf, Japher ?

I don't care how many strokes it takes to get you, of course.

Japher
29-09-2005, 14:06:49
I always say "Not up too par"

still strange to me

I hate the phrase "same difference"

Gary

Why is it that Hairdressers are so-called? They don't clothe my hair and I don't think I would like it if they did.

Surely Haircutters or Hairstylers would be more apt.

I know they sometimes call themselves stylists these days. Maybe an attempt to move away from the inappropriate 'Hairdresser' tag.

Not really. My threads of late consist of a valid mycological querie directed at Laz and the announcement of a perfectly ligitimate day in honour of hioctane living.

You have a problem with those?

By a long shot.

I'm not saying I do, but many people could certainly considered those threads worthless.

Why is it that people actually answer a 'why is it' question here serious??

King_Ghidra
29-09-2005, 15:06:50
because this is a serious discussion forum

Nills Lagerbaak
29-09-2005, 15:07:25
Because it's annoying watching people trying to get millage out of silly little observations that they think are some how cryptic but in reality aren't.

Funko

Why is it annoying?

Its because Golf is gay.

He's geeky. In a good way. In a dragon slaying type of way.

Nills Lagerbaak
29-09-2005, 15:20:25
Yay! (Although I didn't play RPGs when everyone else was....)

I like Lord of the Rings, computer games and science. That is the limit of my geekdom.

protein
29-09-2005, 15:21:05
That's the dictionary definition of geekdom.

Funko
29-09-2005, 15:22:08
Exactly.

I have a passing interest in science and an obsessive musical nature. I reckon that makes me an honorary geek. Besides, I post here at countergimp and only geeks do that.

Nills Lagerbaak
29-09-2005, 15:24:54
Yeah, I'd say you were pretty much a nerd-boy.

Funko

depends how you define nerd. i have a fantasy art book somewhere. i also like star wars. i'm on the internet alot.

If only we had a Town Crier to announce Nills' non-geekness.

Nills Lagerbaak
29-09-2005, 15:30:05
That's pretty geeky.

I think to be a true nerd you need to know all the interet slang, conventions and smilies (of which I know about 5%). A good test is if you have more on-line friends than real friends.

Have you got any real friends then?

What about if you speak to your real friends on an internet forum more often than you do in real life?

I talk more to all the other losers here because I can use you fuckers to avoid working. All my real friends are not able to help me do that.

Alright, you got, I don't have any friends. Here or in real life.
