A real east end cockney delicacy - except that of the three I still know about, two are south of the river...

Oh and it tastes like cardboard shit...

I've never actually had it but I saw it on that British regional delicacies program with the fish chef.

What sort of pie ?

I've tried eel, didn't taste much different than any other sort of bland white fish.

Beef pie, mash and gravy with eels normally.

Rick Stein?

It used to figure highly in my school lunches as one was right round the corner from where I went to school.

I remember once being nostalgic and going back there saying it was delicious, all I can say is my tastes must have evolved since then - Uurgh!

Did Rick like it?

Yeah, that was him. He loved it. I was dubious though.

Google finds some interesting London history info if you search for "eel and pie". Descriptions of the "piemen" and how they went out of business, etc. etc. etc.

It just has no taste to it - everything is low quality and watery. The liquor that they pour over everything looks like super runny nasal excretions but doesn't taste of anything...

It is poor food for poor people with zero culinary sophistication - which is a real pity because if they used good quality ingredients it would taste luvverly!

Yeah, that's what I thought. Cheap food for peasants...

But there are plenty of dishes from around the world that are cheap peasant foods that we love and eat every day.

G. Kelly, 526 Roman Road, Bow

The 2nd entry was my local shop by my school!

Maybe they have improved since my last visit...

I remember seeing one in Bexleyheath too, and I think there's one on Eltham High Street. Never, ever considered eating in one of the things, mind you...
