Bump for Lurker. All you people really disappoint me. You're either ignorant or don't have a sense of humor, because this is just really really hilarious.

Seriously? Even the Dutch know about it (maybe not surprising given the Euro connection).

HNP

The radio announcer when the Hindenberg exploded. He was sobbing as he described what was happening and lamented 'oh, the humanity'.

Put together with a PSed pic of the explosion for, as Red said, a classic.

However, it is only funny when used well.

I just looked at it again and it got me to laugh this time too.

MoSe
30-08-2005, 09:26:18
I think he never actually said 'humanity', that was an inference of the audience who expected that, his actual intention was to describe the zeppelin with the zoologic simile in the caption indeed.

As far as I can remember he did say "Oh, the humanity", over and over again.

protein

He did. He said something along the lines of "Oh the humanity, the horror, all those people, I'm sorry ladies and gentlemen I can't go on."

I see. Well even with the tenuous link explained it's well... um... err... I guess it's humour that doesn't travel too well. Really needs to be a bit more obvious than a flying manatee apparently passing an oil well while it's blowing off gas.

Sorry.

" It's burst into flames ! "

( ANNOUNCER MORRISON'S VOICE TURNS INTO A BABBLE OF INCOHERENT SOUND FOR ALMOST THREE SECONDS. THEN... )

" Get out of the way ! GET OUT OF THE WAY ! "

( IN A FLASH, HE REALIZES THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SPECTACLE AND HIS OWN UNIQUE POSITION AS EYE-WITNESS WHOSE WORDS ARE AND MUST BE RECORDED. )

" Get this, Charlie...get this, Charlie ! "

( WITH A TERRIFIC EFFORT, HE GOES AHEAD, PRODDED BY THE KNOWLEDGE THAT HE MUST KEEP TALKING, YET HORRIFIED AND SICKENED BY THE AWFUL SIGHT OF THE HUGE DIRIGIBLE IN FLAMES. TYPE CANNOT TRANSMIT THE HORROR IN HIS VOICE OR INDICATE FULLY THE STRUGGLE THROUGH WHICH HE GOES. )

" It's crashing. (PAUSE.) It's crashing terrible. Oh ! My ! Get out of the way, please. It's bursting into flames and it's falling on the mooring-mast and all of the folks between. (GASPS.) This is TERRIBLE ! This is the worst of the worst catastrophes in the world. Oh ! OH ! Four or five hundred feet in the sky. It's a terrible crash, ladies and gentleman. The ship is in flames now and it's finally crashing to the ground not quite to the mooring mast. Oh ! The humanity ! (GASPS.) And all the passengers screaming around here. I told you....(SOB.) I can't talk to people...(SOB.) Their friends are on there. It's...it's...oh...I can't talk. Ladies and gentleman. Honest, it's just lying there a mass of smoking wreckage and everybody can hardly breath. Lady, I'm sorry. I'm going to step inside where I cannot see it... "

( THE POLISHED ANNOUNCER HAS DISAPPEARED AND A HORRIFIED YOUNG MAN IS SOBBING, BROKEN DOWN BY THE TRAGEDY. HIS WORDS RUN TOGETHER AND HIS VOICE QUIVERS COMPLETELY OUT OF CONTROL. HIGH-PITCHED SCREAMS SHRILL IN THE BACKGROUND. )

" Charlie, that's terrible." (SOB.)

" I can't...I Can't...Listen, folks, I'm going to have to stop for a moment becasue..."

( HIS VOICE BREAKS COMPLETELY, HIS CONTROL GONE. HE BLUBBERS PITIFULLY )

" Oh, this is the worst thing I have ever witnessed !"

I'm amazed at the comments here and can only assume it's all in jest.

Yes I watched the news film clip years ago. It's one old news item from millions that occured before my time. And then it's not the whole thing but one small (a strange two word phrase) part that you want a picture of an oil well and huge flying manatee to bring to mind. Speaking reasonably, there's zero chance, or if you have recently seen the footage then next to zero chance of making any connection between the two.

Sorry, I'd like to have found it funny but the linkage is far too complex and obscure for it to be so.

I guess you're not into history or something, because that picture is a classic. I've seen several documentaries on this on Discovery and NGC. The phrase "Oh, the humanity" has become a classic as well, still being used in comedy shows.

Gary, I didn't get the wordplay at first, but I IMMEDIATELY recognised the image as that of a dirigible crashing in flames on its mooring tower. My mind even took a fraction longer to realize the zeppelin had been actually photoshopped with a manatee.
And it's at least 2-3 years I last saw the footage or even a still of the crash.
It didn't even occurred to me it could have been mistaken for an oil well until you mentioned it.

Odd. I have seen newsreel footage of the Hindenburg going up (down?) in flames, albeit probably 10 years ago, but I have never seen that still shot that Protein posted. Nor do I particularly recall anything that the bloke said. Which is what confused me.

Now that I get the reference tho...
