Just got this annoucement from CDV:

CDV to Publish Combat Mission 3: Afrika Korps (Special Edition)

August 23, 2005 -- Cary, NC -- CDV Software Entertainment announced today
that they have secured the North American retail rights to Combat Mission 3:
Afrika Corps (Special Edition), in development by the team at
Battlefront.com. This special retail-only edition includes 65 new scenarios
and 15 new operations, guaranteeing gamers hours of exciting game play.
Combining unparalleled game depth and ease of use with a true 3D
environment, Combat Mission 3: Afrika Korps offers a true combination of
turn-based and real-time strategy to experience the best in WWII tactical
warfare gaming.

Features of Combat Mission 3: Afrika Korps include:
a.. Three theaters of war -- Crete, Italy and North Africa
b.. Historically accurate units representing seven nations, including
Germany, Great Britain, the United States and Italy are available in the
game
c.. Meticulously researched vehicle and uniform models, paint schemes and
sound effects
d.. Fully researched and detailed TO&E (Tables of Organization and
Equipment) for all seven nations
e.. All vehicle combat capabilities are modeled on their real-world
counterparts, and weapons are rated in abilities including effective range
and armor penetration
f.. Realistic weather and terrain affect combat outcomes
g.. Units use line-of-sight and audio cues to determine the position of
the enemy, while the confusion of battle can cause friendly units to
mistakenly be identified as foes
h.. A mission and map editor for creating custom scenarios
i.. Optional Historical Rarity of Units ensures players will no longer
have to worry that their opponents "cherry picked" their forces

Now that CDV is behind it, I'm pretty sure I will see a Beta or the actual game, I'm on their mailing list.

They had more than just graphical improvements planned for CM3, I was kidding. I just don't remember exactly what those were.

Its just Afrika corps re-released with a load extra scenarios and the latest modded graphics - same as you can download off the CMHQ or whatever your favourite site is.

They did it with BO and BB. Game ha sbeen around for a year or so now(?).

Always impressed how stable the CM games are, granted they are not as hardware taxing as most games but they rarely go belly up on you or ship full of show stopping bugs.

The usual CM patch is to fix something really important. Like correcting the frontal armor on the 1945 Hezter to be 60mm@55 degrees rather than 60@52.

I don't have 3, which is why I'm hoping to get this version gratis.

So this is not the "new engine" CM?

I guess that would have been called CM2, wouldn't it? :o

at some point, they changed the nomenclature

That's what had me confused. Nomenclature modification.
