Do NOT put wallpaper directly on bare drywall.

Last night I steamed off the wall paper and chunks of the drywall.:bash:

Now I have to smooth out the area I damaged, seal the wallpaper that's left, then paint over it and hope for the best. There are primer/sealers made for this purpose, that's one blessing.

Spent about half an hour cursing the previous homeowners stupidity.

Actually, I'd prefer no wallpaper at all, anywhere in the house, but I'll settle for minimal amounts.

welcome to my life

our previous owners stripped all the skirting and architrave off downstairs, painted purple paint over a bare unpointed brick wall, and cleverly designed a light in the loft that goes on when you turn on the landing light, regardless of whether you're in the loft or not, and used superglue to put a winnie the pooh border up.

One word, well two

Lining paper

Put it up then paint over that. Will hide a hell of a lot of unevenness in the wall. Just don't put too much paint on and waterlog it or it will take days to dry

Also, a lot of wallpaper will come off leaving a layer of lining paper behind it. Just paint over that and all will be well.

:D I have *LOADS* of patching to do on the kitchen walls plaster at the moment. Vinyl wallpaper proved a sod to steam off, then I found paper thin top coat plaster coming away in places, and much deeper chunks elsewhere. Almost looks unpatchable, but to put on a further coat onto the thick layers already up, would give me more plaster than space left.

It's all the fun of the DIY game ;)

Found a new "wallpaper primer" that's supposed to seal it off and be paintable. I'm the paint industry's guinea pig!

Do not attempt to use pliers to fix a rusty old lawnmower on a Sunday morning when you have a hangover. I managed to slip and squeeze the end of my little finger so hard it split open and started pissing blood.
