View Full Version : How fucked is my computer?

Was copying some files over the network at the weekend and the machine died horribly. I had to power off to reboot something I've very, very rarely had to do on XP

After that crash it wouldn't boot past the XP splash screen in normal mode, but it will in safe mode.

After a while I got pissed off and decided I might have broken things with a couple of updates I'd done so tried to reinstall windows  it got about half way then totally hung when it tried to reboot halfway through the install.

Current state:

Sometimes it'll boot up to the XP splash screen and then hang there, sometimes it won't boot at all, just sits there flashing the floppy and CD drives and hard drive (looking for something to boot off?)

I did think it was so fucked that I'd try just wiping the disk and starting from scratch but that also failed, got partway through then totally hung.

Anything else I should try? It's still under warranty so if the hard disk is shagged they'll send someone out to replace it for me.

Support desk is only open during the day so I can't call them until Saturday anyway.

Can you run a disk check from a bootable floppy or something ?

That sort of problem, where you can't even reinstall, suggests hardware to me.

This is probably a good prog, I have an earlier vesion and was very impressed. Not cheap though (http://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm)

Oh yeah, booted from a Norton antivirus CD but it wouldn't let me change to the C: drive to scan that.

I think, as it's under warranty, it's not worth risking that : you should just sling it back at them.

Otherwise I'd have recommended the old, swap bits with a working PC and see when the fault moves' ploy.

Go to your HDD manufacturer's site and grab their diagnostic utility and slap it on a boot disk. See what it tells you.

Get the OS disk, boot to recovery mode and try all the HD utilities like chkdsk /f and bootcfg and shit like that. Then drink some beer.

Of course, Fdisk would have told you if your HD is fucked - shame it's not been on recent Windows releases.

What machine is it out of interest?

There's a very good tool for cases such as this (before you started to reinstall that is) - it's called ERD commander

An engineer is supposed to be phoning me today to arrange when they can come out and fix it.
