Is it cool? Are the camping sites? Are there bicycle hire shops? And most importantly, are there coffee shops?

When last I drove through it all seemed rather heavily industrial, but the flights are cheap!

Rotterdam is the place to be in Holland right now. Be there this weekend for the summer carnival!

I was kidding I've never been to Roterdam actually :)
I was talking to a dutch guy some time ago when I was in Holand and he told me Rotterdam is more conservative than Amsterdam. He gave as an example that roterdam is where Fortyin (sp?) came from. Whereas Amsterdam is more relaxed etc. Of course that could be just his opinion. But he describe Roterdam as a "harbor" city, kind of like the Antwerp of Holland (Colon take it easy :D )

Drekkus
28-07-2005, 22:28:50
If anything, Amsterdam is the conservative city these days. It's getting to be one big outdoor museum for old people. People are getting things done in Rotterdam, any outrages idea can be done here, unlike in Amsterdam.

look at:

And the women tug their hair
Like they're trying to prove it won't fall out
And all the men are gargoyles
Dipped long in Irish stout

The whole place is pickled
The people are pickles for sure
And no-one knows if they've done more here
Than they ever would do in a jar

This could be Rotterdam or anywhere
Liverpool or Rome
'Cause Rotterdam is anywhere
Anywhere alone
Anywhere alone

Muff should make a song about Rotterdam. With a lot of loud guitars.

Funko

Who are Muff?

Mr. Bas
29-07-2005, 10:40:30
I don't think Rotterdam is the place to go to in the Netherlands. From my admittedly limited experience there, the nightlife is fairly boring and the city itself is far less pretty than many other dutch cities.

Coffeeshops, bicycle hire shops and camping sites are everywhere. Go to Amsterdam, Utrecht, Groningen or Maastricht instead.

But admittedly, if you're looking for pittoresque old towns, Rotterdam isn't your place.

did anyone begin to organise the October intercontinental CG meeting in Rotterdam yet?

Last September Drekkus found out for zmama and me a cute cheap hotel on the Maas banks, where you had to type a numeric code on a keypad to get in, and where the access to our room was thru the... bathroom!

I think a selective group of posters are welcome at MrG's place, which is dead in the centre. I'll have to talk to the minister of War to check if I'll have space available in my house. :D

Funko

Me and Tizzy have an invite, I think so MrG can repair her. :hmm: But apparently his flat isn't that big.

Drekkus

Depends on how many people you want to cram in there.

Hull's most famous band...I wonder if they are singing about the place :D

Nav
29-07-2005, 13:28:19
Rotterdam is obviously waay better than Amsterdam otherwise they would have sung that instead.

If I go to Rotterdam again it might have to be by train! (job contractual obligations etc) ;)

OkokOK

I'll hit the travel sites even harder. So far the prices haven't been that great.

And I would love a piece of floorspace from Cameron Diaz's honey or the Minister of War. :D

Despite the fact that there are much nicer places to go to, I'd definitely be up for a Rotterdam meeting. I can offer some floor space as well in principle, but that'll be in Groningen which is a three hour trip during the day and an impossibility to get to during the night. So I'm afraid I'm not much help in that respect.

cheapest Pittsburgh-Rotterdam is now 610 from kelkoo

Pittsburgh-Detroit-Amsterdam-Rotterdam
Rotterdam-Amsterdam-Newark-Pittsburgh

terminating flight at Amsterdam you won't spare much, 595 via Cincinnati (outbound) and Atlanta (return)

MoSe
29-07-2005, 16:02:47
OTOH kelkoo is only finding a 614 one between Washingotn & Amsterdam, so maybe their flight search engine is not the most effective on that itinerary....

my searches were for 1st to 9th

12th to 19th is wednesday to wednesday?
did Mr.G organise a "hotdog week" for us?????

please keep in mind that Nov 1st is national holiday here ("All Saints" ?) and Monday Oct 31st wil be an almost compulsory "bridge" (1 day leave to "bridge" the w/e to the tuesday (or thurdsay) holiday and make it a looong w/e, sometimes encouraged by companies themselves).

Just so that I can organise my leaves in time.

I have no preference for early or late october, except that earlier the weather might be nicer, and later I'll have longer to wait to meet you :)

Funko
01-08-2005, 10:03:29
No particular reason, just midweek was cheapest. We don't have to go for a whole week or over those dates, not sure how long zmama's staying...

Drekkus
01-08-2005, 10:07:58
Are we talking a midweek now? Since my 4 weeks of holiday in june/july, I have little to no free days left at work, and if so I'll probably spend them with my wife. So a weekend thing would be better for me. Unless you don't care whether I'm there or not, and can find your own way around with no trouble. ;)
And of course, your host MrG has a very nice boss who gives him all the free time he needs. :D

Funko

zmama
01-08-2005, 10:52:35

Dont fret Drek...a weekend meeting.
I may just do what I did before and fly to London...then to Amsterdam.
So many different variables...yes I will hurry Funko
