well, in fairness, you could already play pro evo 4 both offline, ans significantly, online, with a regular xbox. So it was already outstripping the ps2 in that respect.

New features stolen shamelessly from some amazon reviews by people who have played the import:

-Holding down X doesn't cut it anymore, if ur running in from behind holding X you WILL foul

-Injuries are improved. U may pick up a knock in the first half and then the player will break down in the second half, unable to continue.

-And perhaps best of all, you can curl the ball using R2. It's great little touch and is a technique used for placement instead of power. They open up their body, let the ball run across and then strike it. Watching the ball curl into the top corner for the first time is pretty special

-Lastly, there are snow pitches. It changes the feel of a game completly.

- New middle shooting special ability star for long-range shots
- Chips more difficult with less skilled players
- Shot bar slightly more responsive
- New animations for clearing/attacking headers
- Players will push their arms on top of the oppositionto climb and gain advantage
- New power meter for small passes, even during free kicks
- Improved one-touch passing and first touch animationsf for key players
- The much sought after flick flak move from Ronaldinho
- Slide tackles more powerful to intercept weak through balls
- New 270* spin collision animation
- Players with new "covering" star adept at blocking shots
- New animation for poking out a leg to steal the ball away
- New second striker role to emphasise players like Kaka
- New wing back role for energetic players like Cafu or Ashley Cole
- New covering ability for mopping up loose balls
- New side ability for touchline play
- New central ability for midfielders
- PSP data link option
- Network for online play
- Ability to name and personalize your save file
- New team selection screen- coose teams by region and compare stats instantly
- New player specific animations
- New 3D crowd celebrations
- Over 70 goal celebrations
- Enhanced edit menu
- Improved player likenesses
- New talent search for utility players
- 28 stadiums
- New wether animations like snow
- Apparently the commentary is not that bad but I predict you will be disabling the commentary before he utters one syllable

it's not hard to do, let me imagine an example:

'ooh i just won the tournoi by beating everyone, that was fun'
a few days later...
'damn, i drew all my games, oh well at least i didn't lose a game. hey, that makes it 6 games without a defeat, i guess i can take some small solace in that'
a few days later...
'hmm, two draws and a win, not good enough to win the tournoi. but hey that makes 9 games without a defeat, i must try and keep this going'
etc.

and just for that jibe i shall have to bring up my 20+ (24?) game unbeaten run on iss pro back in the jesse terrace days...

ah, those were the days, batistuta up front for my master league team... :(

Yes, but no-one else takes it that seriously. :D Anyway, as we know days a win and a loss is better than two draws so unbeaten records are misleading. ;)

IIRC you only racked that up that unbeaten streak at Jesse Terrace when I went away for the weekend so most of them were when you only had Ric and MG to play against. Then when I got back we had like 5 draws in a row. The unbeaten run certainly didn't include a victory over me, which is why I always thought it was a bit of a pointless record. :p

Since Ric moved to Exeter (18 months or so ago?) I've not had a at home PES opponent which is a bit shit. Have only had a couple of dozen proper MP games on PES4. :( Might not bother getting PES5 on that basis.

Played about 6 games of my master league team (who had just made it to league A when I stopped playing). Lost three. I am pretty shit. Can't score! With PES 4 I never broke that barrier where you learn how to start scoring freely which is a pain.

actually i think mr funko is mistaken, i'm certain that it did include a victory or two over him

i'm glad to read no one else takes it as seriously as me, cue funko's many posts on this subject and his subsequent determination to take up the game again...

but i won't cheapen my achievements by having them taken apart, suffice to say my record is excellent and and i have refused to lie down and die where others heads have dropped and fallen to defeat many times

i thought i was being gracious by acknowledging that my unbeaten runs over the years included a large number of draws, but some people prefer to talk a good fight rather than actually put one up

I started playing again 'cause I remembered how good the game was. :p

I just remembered how annoying the unbeaten record thing was.

I'm not ashamed to say that K_G is and has always been better than me at ISS and pretty much all other football games. We've had some titanic battles over the years and sometimes he's been only slightly better but he definitely has the edge in wins etc.

The unbeaten record thing is annoying though you can't have a 'friendly' or experiment with anything because you know that the result is too important, if you don't win you are going to get a:

http://www.night-sky.org/~spotty/writing/sesame/count_cl.jpg

ten games unbeaten, ah ha ha haha
eleven games unbeaten, ah ha ha ha

In fact we only had draws because K_G pretty much flatly refused to play with extra time and penalties (which I enjoy).

I have no idea how many games in a row I beat Debaser, the Shaker and Simon at my old house. But I get the feeling if I'd kept count and rubbed his face in it he'd have stopped enjoying it and would have lost interest in playing me!

These days I'm so out of practice I'm sure K_G would defeat me by several goals with ease. I'd happily give him a game and let him prove it (and extend his unbeaten run!)

I think I cocked that up. :D I was trying to say (with a bit of humour hence the count thing... ) that the reason for my annoyance with it was mainly because I wasn't frustrated at not beating you ie. it was my issue rather than yours but that obviously didn't come across right. :o

I suggest you get yourself in shape Funko before competing in any tournois. You don't want to be the whipping boy!!

Friday might be difficult for me depending on my ability to escape a reluctant appearance at a work colleague's wedding reception. Be good to get 5-6 players together for le tournoi and intoxication.

Think it should happen before PES5 hits the shops though.

I think a Saturday might be best day for it. It will need some time. Commencing in the late afternoon right through to AD-opening perhaps.

Funko
14-09-2005, 11:44:54
Anyway, away from my insecurities for a second and back to the game

PES 5 includes a "Memorial Match" feature which is a feature where each player has a profile and it stores your multiplayer records! :D

For real now. It seems each Option File can be named, so it’s basically your profile. So you go to Exhibition Match and you can select a Memorial Match, which is and Exhibition Match, but your stats get loaded from the memory card and Player 2’s stats get loaded…from memory card 2. So basically, this is about friends taking their memory cards with the option files to your house when you play the game, so you can keep track of your wins, losses and draws. So you play the match and after that you can check out “aggregate stats” where it lists your wins, losses and draws. It also has average rates for things like goals scored, total shots on goal, penalties, free kicks, offsides, fouls, cards and total possession. It’s a bit clumsy in design, but it’s a very, very welcome feature. The problem being that I usually play with two mates, so we are going to have to swap memory cards after every match, which is a bit risky. But I love this feature and I will love watching my played games stat go beyond a few hundred. Sad, but hey!

Good review this anyway. I'm bound to end up getting it. :D £29.99 delivered from play.com.

Yeah, but after a brief pre-season I'll need to regain match fitness, an the only way to get that is to have match practice against humans, and good humans at that. Playing the computer is different...

Doesn't matter if it's in a tournoi situation or not I think. I'm already resigned to being the whipping boy. :D

It's a shame you can't store multiple profiles on the same memory card, that would take a good feature and turn it into an awesome one!

The PlayStation 2, Xbox and PC-DVD versions will allow matches against either one or two-players, and will also facilitate leagues between friends from all over the world. "We are delighted that Pro Evolution Soccer 5 is heading online," commented Hans-Joachim Amann, Head of Product Management for Konami of Europe. We didn't have a tournament in the end.

I did play 2 games against K_G, Chelsea vs Inter.

First match ended 3-3. I was 2-0 and 3-1 up and on paper I should have held on for a win, in reality Adriano missed 3 sitters that neither of us could believe didn't go in and I could well have lost 6-3. Great game that one.

The second one I lost 3-0.

King_Ghidra

I seem to have got addicted to the Master League. It's so much more fun now you can start with the real players in a team.

Last season I finished 4th in the top division, had 15 wins, 10 draws, 5 losses. I seem to have a problem scoring, I didn't discover that Kezman was my best striker until a bit too late in the season. Anyway in the close season I swapped Mutu for Totti and Gudjohnson for Henry which should help on the goals front I hope...

They should be there. Unless you don't carry that game. You should. It is better.
