Got to add this to a map for work. now..

1) I always thought this was a building! Who calls a town by 'The'?

2) Why is it named after an ex-conservative party leader??

3) Where the fuck is it?

I didn't know it was a town. I'm with Nav.

You only ever hear it on the news like - so and so is meeting so and so at the Hague. You kind of assume it's an official centre or building or something.

Why the "the"? Maybe we should call Reading "The Reading"?

It's the city that hosts the seat of government of the Netherlands.

http://www.thehague.nl/

And it seems it's International City of Peace and Justice no less.

But aside from all that, it's big enough to have a football team. :)

Now if I'd heard of a football team called "The Hague" this problem would never have happened!

The original dutch spelling sounds like Kryten from Red Dwarf getting stuck on a word. "Haag".

in italian it even gets an apostrophe

L'Aia or
L'Aja

OTOH in mid/southern Italy we have a regional capital named L'Aquila ("The Eagle" )

hhmmm....
when I drove from Amsterdam to Rotterdam, with zmama navigating, IIRC at some point the highway branched out to the left to get to Rotterdam, while you had to go straight to get into Den Haag.

BTW, what's 'S-Gravenhage???

mr.G
12-07-2005, 11:36:58
