View Full Version : How much leave do you get a year?

Spartak

I get 30 days (for long service) plus another 12 for working a 5 day week during bank holidays and for her maj's official birthday. That makes 42 days in all. Or just over 8 weeks a year.

How about the rest of you?

:bounce:

You git.

I get 20 days + bank hols. That'll go up to 21 days next year though. Hooray.

Not enough - 25 days plus the 8 (?) bank holidays.

I propose we have a new official CG holiday, for bashing gloating posters with more leave :bash:

we don't have bank holidays here, "suppressed" or "weekend falling" ones go into the "permits" heap

Our contract grants us 20 holidays + 14 permits =34 (I think I'll get one more day after 10 yrs working here, I begun my 5th)

We can delay holidays usage till next year, and permits till next 2.
Counting the holidays I didn't use in 2004, and permits I didn't use in 2003/04, I still have almost 60 day accumulated leaves, which I coud use this year if I want. Of those, ~12 I MUST use within 2005 or they'll expire.

mr.G, no leaves amount can compensate us for the satisfaction of seeing your pedestrian bridge project built.

Currently 30 days a year, plus bank holidays.

Next year I plan switching to a term-time contract, so I'll get 13 weeks off yearly.

12 plus holidays - I can work extra hours to save up to 3 days of "credit" time, too. Lots of gov't holidays, though. :)

I'll double to 24 days in a few years.

So I'm figuring that you Brits call your public holidays bank holidays. Weird, cos we actually have a bank holiday. The rest are called public holidays (well, technically so is the bank holiday)...

That's probably the annual equivalent, but it will accumulate on a pro rata basis.

(ie. you'll have to work X hours before being entitled to a day of holiday, and if you worked full time it'd end up being 21 days per year)

We get 3 unexcused, but after that we need a doctors note. Some asshole here has abused the former priveledge to the point where a rule change was made.

Oh, and what a suprise, he called in sick again today.

Guy has worked here for just over half a year and has taken 10 days off and been sick at least 10 more. Fucker is leaving the company in the middle of August, so good riddance. I hope they make him pay for the days he didn't use.

425 PA, is not per annum, I guess :)

Venom, you have one guy abusing the system, so instead of management taking him to the woodshed, everyone gets punished? Great management. Are you sure you don't work for the government?

MoSe
05-07-2005, 18:16:18
Interesting.

Here we need a doctor's note to claim a sick day.
AND, a doctor's note can't be for less than 3 days.
taht is, if you're sick for 1 or 2 days ONLY, then you can't be really that sick to claim a (paid) sick day extra from the already granted leaves.

So, if you you feel sick for only 1 day, you can:
- stay home 1 day without a doctor's note, and CONSUME one of your *permit* days
- convince your doctor that you need at least 3 days rest and recovery and have him/her write you a note to that effect.

Note that for blood donations you have granted that whole day off, without consuming your leave. Same for specialistic visits (dental care and such).

If this were the government, this guy has most favored nation status. Hopefully, after he leaves, things will return to normal.

You Americans have pathetic holiday entitlements...

MDA
05-07-2005, 18:53:16
Mine comes into line with yours when I get 5 or 10 years of service in - but government has good holidays compared to most anything in the private sector (except teaching school, I guess).

Provost Harrison
05-07-2005, 18:55:56
It's one major reason why I have never fancied moving to the US...there is the money there but not the work/life balance to match it. 5 or 10 years is one hell of a long time to wait to get a sensible amount of holiday. We all need time out...

Hell YES! It may not be so bad to have been an American all your life and thus expect crappy vacations, but to some from somewhere else with much more holiday entitlement and to be reduced to 10 days a year... Especially since I used to be a contract programmer and could take off 2 months (unpaid though) per year. :(

This is what you get for living in an ultra-capitalist society. If it wasn't for the stinkin' communist unions, I doubt we'd even get 10 days. Go socialism!

then why are government employees perceived as unproductive? :) (they spend too much time on internet forums?)

I agree, though. Extra time off to recharge really makes a difference. By working an extra 30 minutes a day I get another 10 - 12 days of "fake vacation" in the form of credit time.
