http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/06/23/poll.america.ap/index.html

In Britain, almost two-thirds of Britons, 65 percent, saw China favorably, compared with 55 percent who held a positive view of the United States.

In France, 58 percent had an upbeat view of China, compared with 43 percent who felt that way about the U.S. The results were nearly the same in Spain and the Netherlands.

The United States' favorability rating was lowest among three Muslim nations which are also U.S. allies -- Turkey, Pakistan and Jordan -- where only about one-fifth of those polled viewed the U.S. in a positive light.

If your really curious, click on the uninformitive link - it is CNN afterall.

I wonder what kind of overlap there is between the people who like China and those who like the USA. And how much overlap that has with stupid people.

I love the idea of America.

In reality it can be a bit, well, annoyingly evil and murderous sometimes.

I expect that the two countries are held to different standards. From some we expect more. After all, China isn't part of "The West" and isn't full of families that "recently" came from Europe in the first place. ;)

As for the poll - yes, a matter of expectations. But soon they will level out.

the accent. Its not butch enough.

Here's a simple test you can perform in the privacy of your own home: Stand in front of a mirror and say one of the following phrases in your finest Berks:

Yippee-kay-ay motherfucker!
Hasta La Vista Baby
Do you feel lucky punk? Well- do ya?

America's international image problem is not lost on its own people. Just 26% of the U.S. public thinks the country is well-liked by people around the world. Only the Turks and Russians come close in seeing their country as internationally unpopular (30% and 32% well-liked, respectively). Canadians stand out for their nearly universal belief (94%) that other nations have a positive view of Canada.

Canadians, who presumably have the greatest contact with Americans, agree with Europeans on the negatives, but are less likely to view Americans as honest. And Canada is the only Western nation in which a majority (53%) regards Americans as rude

The European desire for greater autonomy from the U.S. is increasingly shared by the Canadian public; 57% of Canadians favor Canada taking a more independent approach from the U.S., up from 43% two years ago. The American public, by contrast, increasingly favors closer ties with U.S. allies in Western Europ

I like the American way of saying "fuck". Kind of like "faark". I also like the northern England way too. "Fook".

Of course the actual way to pronouce it is the way I pronounce it - since I speak English. I pronounce it "fuck".

The ozzie way is pretty good too.

"Fucking hell, pass me your pen so I can write this down" in Australian comes out kind of "fackin' hil, pass me ya pin so I cin roit thiis din."

That rules. The key to doing an ozzie accent is wincing.

Can't comment for the rest of the world, but for Aussie, New Zealand, and the U.S.A, it's because you worship a sissy non-contact sport like soccer instead of a manly brutal sport like Rugby or Gridiron.

Greg W

Every single person that I met in London from CG seemed to pronounce it more like "fook" than "fuck". And that accent sounds like a Kiwi accent, Protein. ;)

As for the sports thing, the fact that a country with 10% or less of your population can whip your arse at almost every sport known to man has a fair bit to do with it. :D

Don't include me in that. The only sports I like watching are full-contact martial arts/boxing. You can't really call that sissy. Well, actually you can if you aren't near a martial artist/boxer.

As for rugby, I played it as a kid and was pretty good at it, then I realised all the people who play in the country are just as irritating as the soccer people. It's all about tribalism and hatred.

protein
26-06-2005, 02:43:54
and I don't really watch martial arts to feel like I belong to one camp or another, I watch and learn what techniques work and what don't. Learning for my own sake. Watching people play ball games with each other seems like a waste of time to me.

The tribal thing is fun, though, Protein. At least, it is here. The purpose of rugby, as I see it, is to give two random Kiwis who have never met and have nothing else in common something to talk about. And it works a treat.

Though, to the best of my knowledge, there is no analog for the football hooligans you have in Britain. There is the occasional bar incident and the like, but you can't blame rugby for that, more just that two guys or a two groups of guys didn't like each other. There's no level of organisation as far as hunting down the opposition's supporters goes.

And for the record - most martial arts are pretty cool to watch. You could do far worse for an entertainment. =)

That's how it works here. I don't watch soccer because there is nothing to talk about in soccer in nine out of ten games, if that many. I like playing it though. There is nearly always something to talk about in football - and if your the stupid american baseball fanatic, you can always bitch about the steriods and always will until they finally strike themselves out of existance for being so "underpaid."

football is like pantomime, its not about hatred at all. Its all about picking a side and sticking to it, learning the songs and chants, knowing the team, and watching it all evolve. Its a fantastic sport, even if you don't understand the miniutiae.

The fact that some twats use it as an excuse for hatred is another matter.
