And yes, it looks awesome

Read the preview from E3 in this month's issue of PCZone.

What's really interesting is that when your 'species' achieves interstellar space flight, the worlds they will find are populated by creatures created by other people. You can do whatever you like with them (I assume attack em ala war of the worlds), without actually affecting the original players world.

Going to keep a close eye on this one, but won't get too interested otherwise I'll risk being burned like with Black & White...

The other worlds will be just like the sims games, you just download other worlds to populate your universe just like in Sims2 where you can go to my page and download whorehouses and gay bath houses to populate your town.

Man i used to imagine a game like this. I played Sim Life, Sim City, Civilisation and thought it'd be cool to combine the lot.. Should've patented it :pp

The only reason I will look forward to it is because so far only Will Wright has consistantly delivered awesome games.

Black and White, Civ 3, Daikatana, SMAC, Fable, etc.

He is someone who does what he says and is damn good at it.

Plus he doesn't hype anything that isn't done. It may not be polished but he doesn't talk about anything unless it is set in stone or already programed.

I loved his interviews from March till the release of the official Spore site.

Q: Now about your upcoming game spore...

A: (interrupting) No. Move on.

Q: Can't you just...

A: (interrupting again) No. Thats 2 questions you wasted intead of one. Move on.

Whereas Molyneax would be shitting his pants telling you about how his next planned game will cure cancer while assassinating terrorits and delivering Crack babies fromt eh brink of death.

Games with grand concept designs like this worry me because they are the prime candidates to suffer from one of two things:

1) Failure to deliver anything like the range of features and play promised

2) Failure to be released at all

Still the signs seem quite good on this one so far.

Daikatana

Are you serious?!?!

Shit no, not Daikatana. What was the other game that came out about the same time that was an arselocher set in Nobunaga Japan?

Too much hype so far. It can't possible deliver on expectations.

If by some miracle it does, though, it will really really kick ass. I'm not holdnig my breath, though. :D

Loving it so far - have just played the cell and creature stage over and over.

The Cell stage is great. Creature stage not quite as good but still good fun.

The game is all in the building random creatures bit though - what you actually do with them is pretty routine.

Big fuss over DRM (at least in the States)..

That's the "3 installs and you're out"? Yeah, its a shit thing to do to paying customers. I did briefly consider not buying the game, but there's supposedly call-in support for people that need additional installation. They'll probably be dicks on the phone, but I think they'll have to grant it to anyone that's persistent.

Ironically, the ones that steal the game don't have DRM to deal with, because all DRM seems to do is attract hacker's attention. They do love a challenge.

Venom

DRM is fucking retarded. I will not buy this game.

Reminds me of an old boardgame called Quirks...

MDA

or Mail Order Monsters, although at least all the bits had functions in that game

Spore has lots of decorative bits - not as many as I'd expected in the earlier parts of the game, but the buildings and vehicles are more varied

LOL. Bonkers.

game update - the tribal and civilisation sections were dissappointing. Seemed to be little beyond, build big group of units, smash up neighbour. Repeat.

The galactic level is much better. Don't really know what to compare it to. Sort of Sims 2 Star Trek....

My opinion so far:
Cell level - 10/10. Absolutely love it. Very simple, great fun.
Organism level - 8/10 Still pretty good but needed to move on a bit from the cell level.
Tribal level - 6/10 OK but dull
Civilisation level - 6/10 As Tribal level but with tanks
Galaxy level - 8/10 but may be revised upwards as I get further in. There seems to be more in the galaxy level than in the other 4 sections combined. Have played it for 2-3 hours (enough to complete the cell & organism stages easily) and have not really scratched the surface.

Just DRM, not the game?

Actually, from the reviews I've seen, I'll probably pass as well. Also, the DRM seems like too much of a hassle even to bother picking it a year from now when the price drops.

Bought it for the kids, but I kinda like it. Part 1 is simple but funny, part 2 is OK but a repitative, parts 3 and 4 are a waste of time.

The cozmic 5. part is entertaining. The missions are a bit boring and collecting spices sucks a bit. Setting up automated trade routes would be nice.

Funny: Sometime you can here the "M.U.L.E." theme in the backgrounds when talking to aliens - the grand grand grand grandfather of Spore

The glorious part is the editor though. I love that.

grinding my way to see whats in the galactic core now - this part sucks

the design tools are my favorite part - working on a Journey jukebox spaceship next - I could spend days just building creatures and vehicles

agree that the 3 middle phases stink - too simple for anyone that's actually played RTS, even if they played and suck at it like I do

Bob

You're right about the galactic core part. You get attacked every second and it's very difficult to navigate and find a route.

Are you using the terraforming trick to beat the Grox?

I took one look at the number of grox systems I would have to kill and thought "sod that" and went and played MTW2 for a bit instead.

First two parts of spore are still the best, the galactic stage is fun for about 2-3 hours but then gets seriuosly repetitive.

and why can my empire build me a new ship on demand, but not manage to find another crew to save me flying backwards and forwards all the time?

MDA
19-09-2008, 17:52:46
I've been stockpiling ship repair kits and batteries - I just roll over their colonies, bombing them out of existence, they rarely have more than one city on a planet (and it'll usually be underdeveloped), and about 3 bombing runs is the most I need to take them out. Maybe it'll get tougher as I get closer to the core.

I only bother maintaining planets in easy reach of my current location - there's no incentive to maintaining the ones I never visit to harvest their spice. Doing that, I've still gotten achievements for # of star systems owned/colonized/conquered, so it seems to work ok.

It has a very Qeng Ho feeling (if you've read those Vernor Vinge books). You bootstrap a civilization and move on, hoping the next time you return they'll have developed into something truly worth trading with. Some make it, some don't. If you try to run things as an Empire, you get bogged down in increasingly ineffective micromanagement.

When I was still stuck in my Civ mindset, it was just a frustrating slog trying to run everywhere to save ecosystems and fight off raiders, then never having time to explore or wage a war.

Beta1
20-09-2008, 12:07:42
Terraforming is even easier.

You need 1 of each plant and the rays that alter the climate values.

Grox can only live on T0 worlds.

Just fly around at max speed raising the T score to 1, drop the plants to stabilise the ecosystem and leave.

Instant system sanitisation regardless of the number of colonies on the planet. If you keep moving the grox can hardly hit you. You can even go back and pick up the plants again later once they have spread all over.

Vinny made a Wasteland Ranger Center building. Its awesome.

The terraforming trick is interesting. Looks like a decent way to keep my path clear when I need to resupply.

I had noticed they had no developed worlds, but I figured that might change as I dug into the center of their empire. I may be halfway there, but keep getting diverted by new games and WoW.

I made a recognizable Shrek yesterday, but he's got no clothes and a lousy skin texture. Can't find a good shade of green either.
