The UK government hasn't expressed much interest in developing a new generation of civilian super sonic jetliners since the old Concord was such a money loser. The French have been pulling their hair out trying to find a way to make this work though and it appears they've found a partner in Japan.

New York to Tokyo in six hours. Would probably cost six months' wages for the ticket fare.

Yeah, can I bet money on it failing? Someone, namely me, should at least be able to get rich off the project.

The concord was what 1200-1700 US... Yeah, I see this project getting off the ground with fuel cost and airline redline the books madness going around.

I think the French would prefer not to work with the UK on projects like this for a while. The Iraq disaster has made us look like pig-headed incompetent buffoons.

To be fair, though, the French have been pig-headed incompetent buffoons for centuries now. We're just starting to catch them up.

We could have invaded faster if we had a fleet of concorde troop transports.

More likely BAe lost a ton of money on the Concorde and so isn't willing to lose yet more money on a new supersonic jet. The Japanese also supposedly already have a brand new jet engine that is more efficient, more powerful, and cheaper then the old Concorde engine. They're aiming at a lighter weight plane that is simplier to manufacture so costs can be kept down.

the jap one is meant to be silent too. That was my problem with concorde, I had a panic attack every time it went over

I loved it. Apparently Reading specifically asked to be under the flight path, don't know if that's true.

I like how it sent Mr Brown our geography teacher nuts at 11am every day when it went over.

Concorde was an interesting concept but shocking in practice. Very noisy, wasteful with fuel and didn't carry many people...fast but not at all practical...I think it has killed the concept of supersonic aircraft until technology improves vastly...

I say this every time anyone mentions concorde but i dont care :D My Grandad helped design it (the instruments in the cockpit to be specific). They wanted him to move to France but i think it was too much with 4 kids so they stayed. He was very upset when it was decommissioned. I saw an article about the instruments at that time, I wish I could remember which were his.
