BERLIN - A motorcyclist captured on film by German police racing at 155 mph on a road near Berlin has set a new unofficial national record for speeding, Germany's Bild newspaper reported Monday.

Traveling more than twice the speed limit of 62 miles per hour, the motorcycle rider was caught on film in a police radar trap near Bad Freienwalde outside Berlin but authorities don’t know who the speeder was because motorcycles have no front license plates.

“We are not able to identify him,” said Lothar Wiegand, a spokesman for the Brandenburg Transport Ministry in Potsdam.

While German motorists who break speed limits are identified by their license plates in police photos and receive their fines by mail shortly after their infractions, motorcycle riders often escape unpunished.

Bunch of poofs. The speeding record here is about 185mph.

I'd have thought too 155mph a bit low for a speeding record, but maybe that's the "recorded record" (do'h), that is, maybe someone drove faster but it wasn't caught/recorded...
Could it be the bike record, while the car one is faster?

Just to compare, when I was 20 I rode on a Golf GTI (probably "boosted") near Rimini with some local guy, he topped at 220kmh (136mph), but he broke the muzzler when landing after "flying" over a bridge on the expressway... :D
Personally, I don't think I drove faster than 190/195kmh (~120mph), in '85, with a friend's Audi80 on a german autobahn on our way to Munich Oktoberfest.
In more recent years my cruising speed on highways is 160/165kmh, I rarely top 175/180...

I once went 127m/h in a Rover 420 going down the M67 from Hyde. I was young and foolish.

A policeman was recorded at 159mh^-1 going down the motorway a few months ago. He got let off as he was 'getting used to his new car'
